Guest stevem999 Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 As the title says really, have moved from a Moto MPX220 smartphone to a Vario II PPC phone. If I start IE then it connects automatically to 3G/GPRS connection depending on the network coverage. However if I close IE and go back to doing something else, then the data connection stays active, whereas on Smartphones it closes the connection. Is this deliberate, and can I change any settings to do it, or do I have to close the connection manually? Also, related in a way, if I'm using IE or e-mail etc then does my phone become engaged or can it handle data and phone at the same time? (using GPRS or 3G) Lastly, if you turn on the Wi-Fi, does that always take automatic precedence over using GPRS/3G when using internet etc? Or do I have to manually stop the phone from using a GPRS/3G connection if I'm at home/elsewhere and have wi-fi available? Cheers everyone
Guest stevem999 Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 Bumpety bump! Lots of views but no news! Anyone?
Guest Disco Stu Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 I can answer the first question. You press and hold the End Call (red) button to close the GPRS connection. I assume it works the same way for 3G. Alternatively poke the big G and you get the option to close that way. My Magician would take calls while I was connected to the intenet, I think, but it's a long time since I used it and it may never have arised as an issue. :) Finally I would guess that WiFi takes precedence as long as internet connection is set to Automatic. Hopefully someone will come along who knows what they're talking about... :D
Guest stevem999 Posted January 12, 2007 Report Posted January 12, 2007 Thanks DiscoStu - so now I know that I need to turn off my data connection manually but still need confirmation of the others please from someone!
Guest jimbouk Posted January 12, 2007 Report Posted January 12, 2007 1) Wifi will take precedence over GPRS/3G if its is on and connected. If you connect to your wifi and then open IE, it should actually close the 3G connection (although see below) 2) GPRS/3G stays connected after a GPRS session so it is ready for further use - it doesn't cost anything to be connected - it only costs if you actually use it - you can manually disconnect it as above but you don't need to as voice calls etc will take precedence. The only confusing factor is if you use directpush - as this can only work over gprs/3g - so will maintain a gprs connection if it is on, even if wifi is connected.
Guest stevem999 Posted January 12, 2007 Report Posted January 12, 2007 Superb, exactly what I was after. Is DirectPush a bundled app of some sort for push-email?
