Guest tsutton Posted January 12, 2007 Report Posted January 12, 2007 I'm looking for a software that can "talk" to my GPS and pinpoint my location via Google Maps (or Local Live or any other online mapping), where it will show what street I am standing on. It has to be on Pocket PC software (MDA Vario or similar) Does one exists?
Guest gvr Posted January 12, 2007 Report Posted January 12, 2007 Nice idea Tony & if it doesn't exist, it should!! Maybe a pet project for one of the budding MoDaCo member programmers?? :)

Guest mwright Posted January 12, 2007 Report Posted January 12, 2007 That looks good - thanks. Will check it out! JUst noticed this bit in the blurb :- "Currently, the GPS feature is only enabled on Windows Mobile 5.0 devices, because it uses a new feature only available in 5.0. It is disabled on 2003 devices." Is that a problem for you?
Guest tsutton Posted January 12, 2007 Report Posted January 12, 2007 I'm using MDA Vario, which has WM5 installed so that's not a problem. Thanks.
Guest genaldar Posted January 13, 2007 Report Posted January 13, 2007 I thought you could windows live search with a gprs.
Guest tsutton Posted January 13, 2007 Report Posted January 13, 2007 I thought you could windows live search with a gprs. GPS and GPRS are not the same thing. :)
Guest phil12345 Posted January 14, 2007 Report Posted January 14, 2007 GPS and GPRS are not the same thing. :) you can use windows live search and gps, connect your gps to the ppc via bluetooth and note the COM port, then go to windows live search and press menu, settings, and tap on where it says 'no gps' select the right com port and go!!!
Guest genaldar Posted January 14, 2007 Report Posted January 14, 2007 GPS and GPRS are not the same thing. :) I know, it's called a typo. I meant gps.
Guest tsutton Posted January 20, 2007 Report Posted January 20, 2007 I finally had the chance to try Virtual Earth Mobile and I dn't know if it's just my phone but I'll ask.. GPS established connection to my phone via Blutooth. Virtual Earth Mobile loaded up, set the GPS COM ort and verified that it works. I went to Menu -> Locate Me -> GPS And it didn't do anything. :) Does this work for you?

TomTOm or something? [Edit] Well actually - it has started failing with an internal error!! [EditMore] Looks like it was because changed the cache to storage card - after that it fails. Had to uninstall, clean up and install to get it to work - now it works fine. Finds me straight away Edited January 20, 2007 by mwright
Guest pjam001 Posted January 22, 2007 Report Posted January 22, 2007 I use Map for PDA. You can set it to use google maps but also other providers. I find Virtual Earth maps are better. think the site is www.map4pda.com

Finds me straight away So if you set the cache to the internal memory, it works fine? And when you used the Locate Me, did it zoom in to the street you're on. Or just the town name? Thanks,
Guest spangelsaregreat Posted February 4, 2007 Report Posted February 4, 2007 It didn't at the start of this thread, but is does now. Go here and download it!! Works with GPS and gives both the Satellite images (down to street level where available) and normal maps as below. Obviously you need a flat rate data contract for it to work (without large bills anyway). This will restrict its use abroad unfortunately. Still a promising start. Regards
Guest tsutton Posted February 8, 2007 Report Posted February 8, 2007 Thanks. I have now since used Google Maps Mobile about last week. Useful. :)
Guest stormuk Posted February 9, 2007 Report Posted February 9, 2007 I prefer Live as they seem to have another level of detail over google - just wish they would add the 3d option.. Update released in Jan Clicky Here
