Route 66 Major Problems

Does anyone have route 66 and can share experiences

I have purchased the route 66 Mobile 7 WMS for my Orange SPV C600 and have been having continual problems since installation.

My first problem I had was that I installed the software onto the memory card as per the instructions, the setup on the phone got as far as the map selection screen and then the whole programme abruptly exited.

I called route 66 customer support and they said to install the update patch on the website, which I did, to the instructions but got exactly the same thing.

I called them back and they told me to cold boot my phone (factory reset) which I did, the software installed and worked successfully even after reboots.

Come to use it the following day the software wouldn’t start, just went to the 1st GPS screen then abruptly exited.

I have not changed the configuration since then,

Hope you can help me sort it out

I have route 66 mobile 7 WMS, i installed it on my Qtek 8500 without problem, works perfectly. I would get back onto route 66 support, simply because they list your phone as being fully compatible and tested with the software, mine isn't even listed and works perfectly.

Well i did phone the support line and they basically said that i have a corrupt file somewhere and need to factory reset my phone and reinstall route 66 which i did, and it worked

Couple of days later It stopped working again, no apprant reason, no major configuation changes to phone, called support back they told me to do exacly the same, which i ignored because its a pain.

After messing about i discovered that it doesnt like too many text messages in the phone, so you have to make sure that they re cleared before you use them

and the phone needs a restart before you can use route 66

Once this is done it seems to work fine.

BTW, does it support use of house numbers as well or just postcodes?

Yes you can put house numbers in. I don't think it works if you put a house number and a postcode, but it does if you put the house number with the street name.

I have a few issues with my Route 66 on a C600 sometimes too. Namely it sometimes locks up on startup if I don't have my phone paired with the receiver. It also crashed out when choosing the departure location as "work", but the update seems to have sorted it.

I also have a strange issue whereby speed cameras are not shown on the map, but red light cameras are. I've checked the CSV files that come with it in the "POI/BRITAIN" folder by importing them into Autoroute, and the cameras are shown. The file format is the same as the redlight camera csv file so I don't know what is up with it.

It also doesn't seem to pull addresses out of Contacts in the right format too.

The main BIGGEST annoyance with Route66 is the fact it doesn't show up in Task Manager, so if it crashes when only the home button works, you can't kill it off without restarting the phone.

However, on the whole, when it works it seems to function fine. I don't how it will cope if I receive a call at the same time however.

Looks like you had very simiar issues to me, check your messaging inbox (and deleted items) is not too full and make sure you restart the phone before use.

I used to use task manager to clear all my oped applications instead of restarting the phone but reserting seems kinder to the phone.

Not had an issue with the speed cameras but I noticed some speed cameras were not shown and others were (maybe just a new camera)

Mine doesnt seem to recognise the contacts in the address book either, that looks like a bug.

I have managed to recieve a call (over bluetooth headset) with the navigator still working, it resumed after the call ended, had to hit the back button till 66 reappeared, it pasued navigation whilst i was in a call so luckily my caller didnt here "at the roundabout take the 3rd exit" down the phone.

Cant seem to get the house numbers working yet, will try properly later.

Do you know if it is possible to cancel a navigation?

I'm not sure why the number of text messages should matter to it. I usually close all apps using Task Manager before powering up Route66 so maybe that's enough. I've cleared out my old texts so will report it it's made a difference.

I don't think you can cancel the current navigation as such, but you may be able to just go to the 'plan a route' and just quickly put in home and office as source and destination and it may cancel the existing on.

One solution may be to just switch off your GPS receiver so it doesn't receive a signal. Although i've not tested switching the GPS receiver on and off when running the program, as i've always made sure the gps receiver is on and paired before running the program.

Maybe we should create a list of things and give Route66 some feedback, :)

Well im not entirely sure if it is the actual text messages that are doing it or some sort of general memory problem, but then again i have very little stored in the phones memory.

I today was expeimenting with the house numbers, which seemed to work but whilst i was in the student union, 66 failed to start, ie crashed on the GPS screen (no gps paired) and aborted, I tried it later in quieter area and it worked.

I got the WILD GUESS that it could have possibly been to do with the phone trying to pair with other Bluetooth devices in the union and hence crashing, so you could be right in making sure the GPS is on 1st (which I generally do)

A list of things to Route 66 would be good, seems to work well on this forum.

Just to let you know the system sufferd a major crash again and casued major upset to my phone,

The phone itself took several restarts to get it back together again and I lost all the self spellings in my SMS dictionary for some reason

Route 66 will now not start up again even after after full reinstall.

I have emailed route 66 requesting to return the product for a full refund.

I think ill get myself a standalone tom tom unit when i can afford one and stick with a paper map from now on.

R66 does seem to be a bit sensitive - if your GPS isn't on at the start, or you switch it off before closing R66 it hangs.

I've just been trying Live Search, which allows you to download quite detailed maps and directions. You download via a data service (presumably would work over Wifi, I was using GPRS) and cache them on your device/SD.

Might be more use than a paper map, and less hassle than full SatNav

I've had a couple of times where the icons in the menu don't show. No idea why, but closing it re-opening it seems to correct it.

Also it occasionally loses the "Home" and "Office" pre-set location, prompting me input them again.

Route 66 support was ok before and just after I purchased it, but now after e-mailing about the included speed camera POI files not showing on the maps, i'm yet to hear from them.

Well I installed MSN live mobile, and since then Route66 refuses to work. At least I presume that is why it now won't run. It loads a splash screen and then just closes.

I tied restoring the files from a backup of the storage card i'd taken, with the same results.

It needed a:

Remove files from memory card, hard reset, pair with GPS receiver, memory card out into card reader, install Route66 from the CD, memory card back into phone, then Route 66 install should run (but don't register it), then after it's installed uninstall it. Take the memory card back out and into the reader again, install the update from www.66.com, and then back into the phone and install it again. Then it seemed to work again.

This software does seem flaky at best. And i'm now scared to install any other programs incase it doesn't work anymore.

On the plus side, the speed cameras are now showing up on the map, lol.

I wouldn't say R66 is flaky

I've installed several pieces of software (some of it junk) and not had a problem yet. Perhaps it's the type of software you install - ie apps with related functions that perhaps change something that R66 expects to find

That's what one would think, but generally I only have TCPMP, smart explorer, and documents on my storage card. I always close everything using task manager before it run R66.

As long as the R66 files are there on the storage card where it expects them to be, it shouldn't matter what is installed (as long it's not running in memory).

Who knows, maybe it's a ROM version issue. (I'm on the latest ROM from Orange).

Maybe after this hard reset it will behave itself better, but until it does my confidence on it working when I want is a little low.

Thanks!

I've had problems getting stuck at the GPS-screen on my T830 for ages now.

The note about R66 and SMS helped me, I erased all deleted and sent SMS:es and moved all SMS:es from inbox to another folder.

Now it works again (this was my last hope after a lot of re-installs)

It's a shame that R66 is so SMS-sensitive

Thanks again,

Per

Yeah, i've not been able to work out the conection between having too many sms's (how many is too many?) and route66 not running.

I forgot about this the last time and rang R66 support, and was told to delete my sms's.

Yes it corrected my problem, but it would be annoying if you wanted to keep your sms's. I don't know if it would work if they were just 'deleted' and in your deleted items as I usually empty deleted items too.

After using my phone, sometimes I have to restart my C600 to get R66 to run too (tried using task manager to close all apps). Which although a minor annoyance, if it runs then i'm fairly happy.

Deleting my SMS's fixed these problems for me too. Thank you very much for posting your experiences, guys!

I have just bought route66 for my hp ipaq but it freezes half a minute after it starts any ideas? I have an empty inbox, have installed the whole thing again done a hard reset, got the REPLACE INTO and it still does the same thing? The only clue maybe is that it asks to setup a bluetooth connection but cancelled out of that.

Any help would be appreciated.

Guys, I have an HTC-S620 (T-Mobile Dash etc) with WM6.

Route66 has been playing up in the same fashion for me too. I alway get stuck on the startup screen and I have reloaded many times (including the WMS v7 upgrade) so after reading this tread I deleted ALL sms and route66 started ok. I did not have many texts however, perhaps 20 at most in inbox/sent/deleted combined.

This is very strange indeed but I can't help but think route66 support will not recognise the issue so it's down to us to deal with the problems best we can.

Cheers.

Guys, had a reposne back from Route66 support. Simply put, the product is not supported on WM6 so it serves me right for having a problem.

The fact it happenened on WM5 also seems to have passed them by ;)

Anyway, if I keep text messages to a minimum at all times, I don't have any problems with Route66.

As a product, when it works, I like it and I am a long term TomTom user. Having said that, if TomTom worked properly on a WM6 Smartphone, i'd probably choose it over Route66 but only just!

Good luck guys!

Good idea but I already use Oxios to close apps and free memory (up to 18mg'ish) before starting the app.

Sometimes I just turn off and on before using it and clear all texts. Seems to work 'ok' then.

Cheers.
