No Conversation !

I have my 360 connected to live & wanted to talk to one of my mates in this way using my headset.. Just one little problem...I can accept the CHAT invatation & send them but then it doesnt actually let me have the chat.. Where it would say Channel 1 Channel 2 ect.. And the convo would be there it says that but then it just vanishes !! I can't actually have a convo !! Is this just a connection problem or is it me ?? Any advice or direction appreciated
