Guest richardgaywood Posted January 22, 2007 Report Posted January 22, 2007 Guys, Orange have agreed to take back my SPV M3100, on the grounds that one of the keys on the keyboard (v) has gone sticky and takes about twice as much pressure to register as the others. Drives you bonkers when you're typing emails in a hurry. This means that tomorrow afternoon, I'm going to have to give up my stuffed-full-of-data one and receive a blank one back from the courier. What are my options with regards to backing it up to restore to the new one? I see Microsoft helpfully do not support backup through Activesync, does that only leave me with the option of buying Spite or SPB Backup? I have read that Sprite, at least, won't restore to a different device to the one it was backed up from -- would that scupper me, or would two SPVs look the same to the software? Any hands-on advice would be welcomed! Cheers, Richard
Guest marisa4755 Posted January 22, 2007 Report Posted January 22, 2007 I think that neither will guarantee to backup successfully to a different machine (even though everything appears to be the same) However, I had the screen alignment problem and T-mobile sent me a new machine which appeared identical. When I ran Spb Backup, it was perfect EXCEPT (and I have read on the forums, that this applied to others as well) for messaging. It caused the creation of 'ghost accounts' ie accounts which appeared not to be there, but when you tried to name your new account, told you that there was already one with this name. So, I did another hard reset, restored selectively (ie everything except messaging) and it worked fine. I then had to recreate my messaging, which didn't take long at all. You could try it, after all, what have you got to lose? If it doesn't work, you hard reset and you're no worse off than before. Mind you, there's all the fun of setting up again!
Guest sparkymodaco Posted January 23, 2007 Report Posted January 23, 2007 SPB backup free trial version will allow a few backup and restores before you have to buy.
Guest richardgaywood Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 In the end, I bought Spb Backup, as they offered me it with Weather and Diary for $40 and that felt like a very good deal to me (on a day when the UK pound hit the best rate against the dollar for 40 years!) It worked... sort-of. I made a number of backups before surrendering my new phone. My "full" backup didn't apply cleanly; it reported during the process that it could not read from the file and that it may be corrupt, which is rather worrying, to say the least. After the restore my machine would lock up a few seconds after loading the Today screen. In the end, I had to restore a partial backup of Messaging and My Docs, which seemed to apply cleanly. I'm now reinstalling apps manually (and doing a cleaner job than last time, too).

What I know is that the Sprite Backup is the only one can make the job done. There is an function called Upgrade Mode Restore which helps you to restore the backup file made before ROM upgrade or to a new device.

I ran into a world of trouble today with sprite backup :) Ended up backing up email and SMS manually, hard reset, resotring, deleting PIM.vol, soft reset, sync with my excahnge server and then manually reinstalling everything <_< Like you say its a shame microsoft haven't got a built in backup system in active sync...
