3G icon instead of U icon

As you've probably noticed i requested a .DLL from the M3100 / Vario II ROM with Ext ROM installed in my topic below. Purely for the reason that I like the look of the '3G' icon used on the Orange/Tmob ROMs than on the 'U' icon used in the HTC ROM's to indicate 3G/UMTS coverage.

If your interested in changing your icon, I've written a small tutorial below :)

Please note I'm writing what worked for me, some of you may find alternative methods to do this but this is the one that worked for me.

1. Download and install SmartExplorerEN from www.binarys.com (yes i know its a smartphone app but works almost as well on PPC and is alot better than the built in file manager :D)

2. Download either of these two zipped .DLL files and copy them to your phone:

• For 3G icon: 3G.zip
  
• For U icon: U.zip
  

3. Put your phone into flight mode

4. Using SmartExplorerEN, unzip the file, then go into /Windows and rename the file phcanOverbmp.dll to phcanOverbmp.old

5. Then copy the unziped phcanOverbmp.dll to /Windows

6. Soft reset :D

If you experience problems modifying the original file in step 4, try soft reseting after step 3

Hi, I have an Orange SPV M3100 (HTC TyTN). I canceled the install of the Orange Extended ROM when I last did a hard reset, in order to get a clean Windows Mobile 5 install, with no bloat. The one thing I would like to get back from the Orange customizations is the 3G Logo.

Unfortunatly when I tried this method, I got an error message in SmartExplorer saying that the file was in ROM and could not be modified.

Anyone know a different method to change this?

Did you put your phone in flight mode first? Also try reseting your device before carrying out this method and after step 3 :)

Just installed the 'test' HTC AKU3.3 ROM on my hermes and i now get a lovely 'H' icon whe i'm in HSDPA coverage :D

Doesn't work for me either with a Dopod 838 Pro. Even after setting flight mode and doing a restart. Any other suggestions?

Use GSFinder (attached) instead of smart explorer
