Guest frodiggs Posted January 26, 2007 Report Posted January 26, 2007 using t-mob latest rom 2.26.10.2 wwe hi all, I cannot browse the web when conned to my wireless router wired linksys with wireless dlink di-524 connected (upgraded firmware) i think i recall getting to the internet with wifi before but then suddenly i would not get an IP from wifi. then i flashed wifi router and setup static IP via the wizard using mac on pda. get an IP really quick now but no web browsing as i get no DNS servers error in netfront- IE just hangs. to top it off i cannot get anything by IP. i'm thinking a setting on the router but can't figure it out. i have not changed any connection settings but have tweaked with sktools but i think it worked before that. GPRS works fine but i'm so over gprs, need tmob's edge if it really exists...
Guest MikeSel Posted January 26, 2007 Report Posted January 26, 2007 A few things you could try: Cannot access some web pages You may need to lower the MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) value on your network card or/and on your router. MTU can be changed to accommodate fragmentation of packets; specially encoded packets with secured data can be too large for the current MTU and cause too much fragmentation. Changing MTU on the router alone may not resolve the issue, in this case proceed with changing MTU on your computer's Network Adapter. Changing MTU on router Step 1. Log into your router by open your Internet browser (e.g. Internet Explorer), enter the IP address of your router (e.g. 192.168.0.1) and press Enter. Specify username (admin) and password to log into the router. Step 2. Click on the Home tab and click on WAN on the left side. Step 3. Look for the MTU field (note that it may not be available in some router models). The default MTU value is 1500, change it to lower number, e.g. 1200. Step 4. Test your ability to connect to those specific sites youre having trouble with. If changing the MTU rate to 1200 does not resolve the problem, start lowering it in increments of ten until the problem is resolved (you may need to go as low as 600 depending on your DSL connection).Or Make sure the TCP/IP settings are set to 'Obtain an IP address automatically'. Try releasing and renewing the IP address for your ethernet adapter. It should pull a 192.168.0.x address with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and a Default Gateway of 192.168.0.1. If it does not get an IP address in this range, specify the address to be 192.168.0.10, subnet mask 255.255.255.0, the default gateway 192.168.0.1 and the DNS that your ISP is using. Try and go online. Note: You will need to set your DNS to what your ISP's use. This should be displayed somewhere on your router.. If not a quick google should help. Or post your ISP here an someone should reply with the needed settings.
Guest jimbouk Posted January 26, 2007 Report Posted January 26, 2007 Unless you have changed your connections in the device, it should default to providing web over wifi. If you have set a static IP, have you also set your own DNS servers? I personally leave mine and my clients wifi routers to provide IP and DNS etc to client devices (over DHCP) - it saves loads of potential problems. I would concentrate on why the router wouldn't give you an IP address first. Try turning off wep/wpa and mac filtering on router and then connect. If that works properly - then turn on each one at a time. (Remember your wifi mac address is different to the devices wired mac address)
Guest frodiggs Posted January 27, 2007 Report Posted January 27, 2007 well i dropped the mtu down to 1100 and also configured the devices sdio wlan adapter to get automatic ip and added 2 dns servers from my ISP. so the devices ip config is the wireless routers address as dhcp and gateway with the isp's DNS servers. i also per tmobile went to wep 64bit encryption which i'm not too fond of - no luck then i removed all encryption - nothing dropped the mtu down to 800 no luck by the way the wireless router is connected to the uplink port of the wired linksys which is of course connected to comcast modem going nuts now, close to a hard reset, maybe a sktools setting tweaked it bad?
Guest jimbouk Posted January 27, 2007 Report Posted January 27, 2007 (edited) Hold on there fella! You have a cable modem, then a linksys router, then a wireless router? Number 1) The wireless router (if it is a router) should be set to work as an access point - most of them have that as an option. 2) The wireless router should be plugged into a normal cat5 port on the wired router (but using a crossover cat5 cable usually). If you havent set your wireless router up to work purely as an access point, you will have two dhcp servers on your network. Do you need the wired linksys router - if the wifi one is a router too? Guest frodiggs Posted January 27, 2007 Report Posted January 27, 2007 by the way the pda has no issues what so ever getting either a fixed or dynamic ip from the wireless routers scope -wired routers WAN DHCP scope is 192.168.1.100 for 5 machines -wireless DHCP scope is "".106-.199 -wireless router is "".99 the very stange thing is that now looking at the dhcp table for the wired router i don't see my wired computers when connected, very odd.
Guest jimbouk Posted January 27, 2007 Report Posted January 27, 2007 You dont want to have two dhcp servers on the same lan! Set the wireless router to work as an access point only, disable its dhcp server... and tell it to reserve itself an ip address of 192.168.1.254 (so you can always access its web interface from anywhere on your lan). Then the wired router will act as gateway and dhcp server and the wifi access point simply allows wifi access to your gateway.

Guest frodiggs Posted January 27, 2007 Report Posted January 27, 2007 yeah technically i guess i don't need the wired router. i do have 2 pc's that have wired connections and the d-link has 4 lan ports anyway- never got around to swapping out the older linksys. i may just drop the linksys to make things simpler. i'll set this up and get back
Guest jimbouk Posted January 27, 2007 Report Posted January 27, 2007 Amazingly I have just done the opposite. I have a Belkin wifi router already - and it has been working fine. I recently was given a new Belkin N1 wifi router to test (but the cable/dsl version and I have ADSL)- I wanted to try it out, so I disabled wifi on the older router, clicked the link to set the new one up purely as an access point and connected them together with a crossover cable. All working fine and the N1 router gives me a true 300 metres range on my laptop - and about 75-100 metres on my Hermes. Having said all of that - if I was in your shoes, I would indeed remove the old wired router. Set the new one up in its place and then try your device. I would hard reset the wifi router to its factory settings to remove any MTU changes etc you have tried. If the device doesn't get the internet when you;ve swapped it over - test it with another wifi device first (ie a laptop). Then if that works, you know its your connection settings in your device.
Guest frodiggs Posted January 28, 2007 Report Posted January 28, 2007 exactly, go the the least common denominator and build up. i'm sure i'm getting some packet collision as well with this setup but can't really tell sice i'm so pampered with a blazing 3mb cable connection that has gone down only 2x in 6 years. kudos to comcast cable in my area, now if we could break the cable tv and internet monoply maybe we can see some more realistic pricing like 15$/mo instead of $39/49. anyway i'll check back once i swap this out.
