Vario slow contacts search

First, a big thank you to all who helped with my duplicates (Paul), synching and wifi connection probs with the Vario. Having now got all Contacts (2000+) on the machine, I was surprised at the time it takes to Search for a contact. Notes are fine as is Calendar, but the Contacts search takes over a minute, and sometimes displays nothing until I press Stop, which then displays the correct search results.

The MDA which has identical data and synchs in the same way as the Vario, is almost instantaneous since I nuked the dups.

Any suggestions??
