Guest gladel Posted February 2, 2007 Report Posted February 2, 2007 Hi. Is it by any chance that Windows Mobile 6 will be offered as an OS update to our existing Windows Mobile 5 much like a ROM upgrade or something? Or WM6 is a whole different ball game?
Guest Confucious Posted February 2, 2007 Report Posted February 2, 2007 Very, very unlikely going on past experience.
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted February 2, 2007 Report Posted February 2, 2007 It's possible, but not really overly likely. P
Guest gladel Posted February 2, 2007 Report Posted February 2, 2007 Yea, I doubt it too. But I haven't heard or seen any device with Windows Mobile 6 yet or have I missed it? Anyway, any take on WindowsMobile's marketing strategy on this? I mean, like in Smartphones, making a leap like say VGA to QVGA screens and upped the OS is okay, but designing another with a 320 x 240 (landscape) screen means remaking most portrait mode applications/games to landscape (eg. Blackjack, Q, etc.) which makes it tedious for software makers to re/create. Any opinions?
Guest genaldar Posted February 3, 2007 Report Posted February 3, 2007 I was at the Microsoft Launch event yesterday and the rep at the Windows Mobile booth hinted that the dash on the table was running Crossbow. But he wouldn't let me play with it long enough to verify. So updates may be available. And lets not forget the Motorola MPX200 could upgrade to wm 2003 or wm 5.
Guest jimbouk Posted February 3, 2007 Report Posted February 3, 2007 My understanding is that WM6 won't constitute any major changes (such as the persistent memory change from Wm2003 to WM5) and thus it shouldn't be too difficult for upgrades to be done - whether device sellers and/or networks will want to is another thing altogether. I will lay a bet though that it wont be long after Wm6 comes out that there will be working roms on various sites for most popular wm5 devices...

Some of the changes and features in WM6 will only appear once a device has sync'd with an Exchange 2007 server... Exchange ActiveSync has been enhanced in Exchange Server 2007. The following are some of the new and enhanced features:Support for HTML messages (Via Driect Push)Support for follow-up flags (OTA)Support for fast message retrieval (Think blackberryesk "automore")Meeting attendee information (via the pirect push calendar information)Enhanced Exchange Search (Search emails which are not stored on the deivce but are are pressent on the server)Windows SharePoint Services and Universal Naming Convention (UNC) document access (Via links in emails)PIN reset (via an Exchange 2007 Console or Outlook Web Access)Enhanced device security through password policies (Loads of flexability, IT admin can restrict Attachments if required...)Autodiscover for over the air provisioningSupport for Out of Office configuration (Direct from the device UI or Outlook Web Access)Support for tasks synchronizationDirect Push More info: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998357.aspxAlso, I am sure that a few devices will be getting official WM6 upgrades :) Edited February 3, 2007 by m@...
Guest Confucious Posted February 3, 2007 Report Posted February 3, 2007 Great - but when is SBS 2007 out?
Guest geoffrey118 Posted February 9, 2007 Report Posted February 9, 2007 Is there a list of models which one could install the WM6 on? I mean....I have an MPx220! Think maybe this OS will work? since they made the WM5 compatible with MPx200 and not the 220! hmmmm.....
Guest awarner (MVP) Posted February 10, 2007 Report Posted February 10, 2007 They did not make WM5 compatable with the MPX200 as such, it was just an experiment so see what the minimum spec a device could be to run the OS to monitor the performance. It was never going to be an intentional release, the same applies with devices like the C500 etc.
Guest mini_man Posted February 10, 2007 Report Posted February 10, 2007 however, there have already been two leaked versions. One for the Universal and one for the Wizard. Ive got the wizard crossbow rom running on my vario at the moment and can safely say that it is incredibly stable running well and the only thing missing is the MMS and Camera app (after tweaking I added them in) but my The Doctor tells me that those functions are added in when the rom is sent to HTC or something like that? (BTW I will ignore all pms requesting this rom) So maybe these fully functioning roms will be released? as the C500 and MPX200 WM5 roms were extremly buggy I seem to recall and were missing quite alot of things from them. So who knows? Sam
Guest Ingvarr Posted February 10, 2007 Report Posted February 10, 2007 (edited) These ROMs are largely from the same area as previous "unofficial" WM5 ROMs You see, HTC is a favorite partner of Microsoft in hardware. So in last years always when Microsoft develops new WM version, they use HTC hardware to test it - therefore producing development firmware builds for HTC devices. And then these builds leak up (generally they should remain internal, but it difficult to keep em secret forever, and I think they see no big harm in it - they have no responsibility for these leaks). But this is not "official" upgrade way, not even close to it. Being developer builds, these generally have some annoying quirks or bugs. Performance/battery life often bad due to being debug builds, some vital parts may be omitted (parts not needed for the particular purpose this exact leaked build was originally made for). Guest mini_man Posted February 12, 2007 Report Posted February 12, 2007 Im just saying that it seems very near completion, and very unlike the motorola mpx200 and c500 "minimum specification" roms, why make it if your not going to release it? Sam
Guest Ingvarr Posted February 12, 2007 Report Posted February 12, 2007 why make it if your not going to release it? I wrote why... To test WM6 on actual hardware during development process.
Guest Posted February 13, 2007 Report Posted February 13, 2007 Hi. Is it by any chance that Windows Mobile 6 will be offered as an OS update to our existing Windows Mobile 5 much like a ROM upgrade or something? Or WM6 is a whole different ball game? There's a thread at PocketPC Thoughts - Pocket PC Thoughts - i-Mate JAQ3 To Get WM6 Upgrade that maybe - just maybe - offers us a faint hope that we might be able to get upgrades to WM6. It's faint in fact it may be almost transparent but it's there. :)
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted February 13, 2007 Report Posted February 13, 2007 You notice the source for that story? :) P
