Vario II Java Hell

I am having problems with some java applets on my Vario II. When I launch the gmail applet, it promptly crashes and I am unable to run the logmein applet. It fails to recognise that it is already installed and trys to download and install again.

The strange thing is that I was able to operate this on the M3100 which I previously had (dont ask!).

I have tried installing the IBM software and also tried the upgrade of the current version. The 'upgrade' inloved using the Security Configuration Manager and left me requiring a hard reset!

I spotted a few posts on the net stating the same problem......anyone got a solution?
