Guest seaephpea Posted February 20, 2007 Report Posted February 20, 2007 You can see the phone at: http://akihabaranews.com/en/fr/news-13316-...;EM+Mobile.html And a video of NVidia's UI for it at: Tom
Guest Ingvarr Posted February 20, 2007 Report Posted February 20, 2007 And what the point? These effects look cool, no arguing, but this is just eye candy. It carries no real usability value - why to waste the power & battery life on it?
Guest seaephpea Posted February 21, 2007 Report Posted February 21, 2007 Yeah but people like eye candy. Plus it demonstrates the capabilities of the chip. Would be great for games. It's an interesting phone in any case (800x480 screen). Tom
Guest seaephpea Posted February 21, 2007 Report Posted February 21, 2007 There are more details here. Tom
Guest Ingvarr Posted February 21, 2007 Report Posted February 21, 2007 (edited) Again, if it would be only for "better looks", its of course good. But this is not main power PC, these useless animations will greatly reduce the device autonomy (or you will need bigger battery therefore increasing weight). These factors are a lot more significant for mobile device, than playing Half Life 2 on it. Edited February 21, 2007 by Ingvarr
Guest bennish Posted February 26, 2007 Report Posted February 26, 2007 (edited) there is such a thing as proof of concept, Ingvarr. Just because you're not that big on the interface you don't need to come in here saying it's totally useless and 'what's the point' Wouldn't you agree we need to push the limits of devices? Something like this will mean people will develop more efficient ways of achieving it. I mean really, a black and white pda uses less power... you don't really neeeeeeeeed colour... know what i mean? Interesting post seaephpea, thanks Edited February 26, 2007 by bennish
Guest Ingvarr Posted February 26, 2007 Report Posted February 26, 2007 (edited) Iam big on the interface. But there is still useful and useless things (by useful i mean not these that "make your heart warm", but these that will make that dull and everyday office work more faster and effective - and not just because they "put you to good mood of owning awesome device", hehe :D ). If you have such distinction criteria, it becomes a lot clearer. Making colorful interface is useful, for obvious reasons. Btw you are wrong, monochrome LCD wouldnt draw much less power (because mainly what draws power is backlight). You cant compare it with increase that goes from putting a second powerful (graphics) processor inside. Making windowed interface is useful. Because the whole windows & GUI concept a lot more representable then some text in the command line. Making interface aesthetically pleasing is useful. Of course, its more important to make it more ergonomic, so these fancy window frames will not distract you from what is actually inside them. So, say, putting fancy 3D animations on windows maximize and minimize, app switch is nice-looking but useless in actual work, because they serve no purpose, they just slow down the work. And its mainly these kind of "improvements" I've seen in that particular demo, other stuff shown will not require a 3d accelerator inside your pda. If you cut out the fancy smooth rotations, zooms, fade ins and fade outs from it - it can be totally implemented on today pdas, with lot less price and a lot more authonomy. But of course, NVidia point is to cut another market share. So they try hard ;) Btw, they are not first, Intel provides good 3D/graphics mobile accelerator for long ago already - 2700. Yes, its awesome in some aspects (tested it on Dell Axims), but still its not that usefull even while powerful, so it remained a niche product. Edited February 26, 2007 by Ingvarr
