Guest shuraley Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 I am having difficulties connecting my Wi-Fi to an access point. I did upgrade to the latest MDA version. I have a cable modem (dynamic IP) with WEP encryption - not sure if this has anything to do with it. At times I do seem to catch the connection and it works. Then I loose it. I see no logic there. I have 2 laptops on the same wireless router (D-Link DI-614+) and they both work fine.... Any suggestions? Do I need to change settings on my router? Thanks everyone!
Guest jimbouk Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 If it works sometimes but not always then its probably nothing to do with the actual settings. Your device should work fine with WEP in theory. You could try turning WEP off and seeing how reliable it is. You could then enable MAC filtering if your router offers it. Otherwise, make sure your MDA's wifi is set to max performance and not max battery.

The MDA does work fine with the Hotspots at Starbucks (Canadian ones: Rogers, Bell). Not sure how they are configured diffrently than my router (could be static IP vs. Dynamic?). A suggestion that I was contemplating that I saw at another forum is to use a ROM different than T-Mobile- since I am not a T-Mobile subscriber I don't believe it would matter. What do you think. And if you agree do you know where I would find a different ROM for this device? Thanks again for your help!!
Guest jimbouk Posted February 23, 2007 Report Posted February 23, 2007 If it works fine with public hotspots, then I wouldnt change anything on the device. Is your SSID on? Steps: See if there's a firmware update for your router at home.If so, install it. Then factory reset it according to the firmware installation instructions. Then change the SSID to one of your choice. Make sure it is set to broadcast ON. Some WM devices dont like connecting to hidden wifi APs. Remove the existing settings for the home wifi from your device (click and hold on the SSID to bring up the submenu that offers "remove settings"). Now see if it will try to connect. If so, then add WEP to your router and then enter the key on your device. Hopefully it will still connect.

Ive been thinking of upgrading to a new wireless router for other reasons. May be this will help the MDA to connect. If you have any other suggestions let me know (changing the ROM in the MDA?) Thank you again!!!
Guest jimbouk Posted February 27, 2007 Report Posted February 27, 2007 Well if SSID broadcast, removing all security etc isnt helping, then maybe a different rom might help... but it still comes back to the fact it works in public AP's. Just wondering if you are getting interference and the weaker wifi in your device is suffering compared to the laptops. Is your device wifi B or G? If its G, then setting your router to only offer G might help - as B traffic can interfere with G. Otherwise try forcing a connection whilst stood next to router (as above, click and hold on the SSID in the network list and select connect). This usually forces a wifi connection where a device is a little loathe to connect. Once connected, keep an eye on the wifi signal strength and try moving around the home to see if it cuts out in certain places.
Guest Posted March 1, 2007 Report Posted March 1, 2007 Just a suggestion - you might want to see if your router is using AES in the security protocol. As far as I know the "latest" MDA version doesn't support AES at all. If it is you'll need to switch to TKIP or similar or just "not AES" to connect. Good luck.
