Guest Knight_Rider Posted January 25, 2003 Report Posted January 25, 2003 All the more reason for them to make a legal way to unlock your phone to protect against possible virus, unlocking the phone leaves it open to this
Guest Firaas Posted January 26, 2003 Report Posted January 26, 2003 It's not on hold at all. Orange have had the SPV in stock as of earlier this week - and people have bought SPVs for delivery on Friday and unlocked them.
Guest MECX Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 these people are full of crap--people can only get virus if they unlock there own phone and run EXE files on it. even if a virus was released it would be all over this message board/the news in a flash and a fix released. would virus scanning the software before putting it on your phone help??

Not totally sure how it works, but I imagine they could check for SPV viruses.
Guest Rob.P Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 Journalism the true art of reporting complete bollocks, no matter what the cost. You don't need brains to be a journalist, just need to know how to write well.
Guest spacemonkey Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 It's just people picking up convenient excuses. They've never supplied enough of these phones to meet demand. I remember when I was trying to find mine in december that the rumor was that they were holding them until after they'd updated some bugs... which we know is rot cos they didn't fix anything, it was just general lack of supply.
Guest Ed Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 When they say that the phone "blue screens" do they actually mean "has a green LED in the top left hand corner"?... Otherwise I can't really understand why they've said it.
Guest Firaas Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 Blue screen = the Window's blue screen, which usually means Windows has crashed and requires a restart. The same on the phone, when they say blue screen, they actually mean the phone has crashed and requires a restart.
Guest xanadu Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 Just got this reply back from 'The Inquirer' "Hi, I'm not sure I understand your complaint. the first batch of SPVs went out without software fixes. The Orange UK site then showed the SPV as out of stock. Orange are now installing the software patch on shipping models. The next release of SPVs will therefore have the software fix. What exactly did we get wrong? Oh. And the hackers had two separate fixes - one for the UK model and one for the French models. Regards Tony Dennis "
Guest Firaas Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 Hmm, I've still had no response from either Tony or Mike, here's a snippit from my email: I noted: "In reality, by total contrast, sources in the reseller community inform us that the Orange SPV is presently officially 'out of stock'. Not because Orange has run out but because it is rapidly installing the software fix which will prevent hack attacks to the SPV's security features as here. µ" ...but, can assure you that http://www.orange.co.uk/spv was showing out of stock just this Monday - meaning that Orange has begun to sell new phones, the first set of which (one was purchased today) are still allowing for the certification workaround. After buying two phones, for which my year's contract is expected to be £370 each, I'm glad someone's worked around the security situation - there is no other feasable way that I could be playing on my GameBoy emulator, or perhaps Doom on the way home ($600/program is way too much). I wouldn't have the ability to flick through Registry Editor to change those annoying sounds that come up when I press the Menu button either. Or be able to terminate those annoying non-closeable programs using the newly-released Task Manager.
Guest ajb3000 Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 We are all Smartphone Hackers now apparently ;) One thing this is puzzling, how can it be so hard to get an SPV for the majority, when I just walked into Carphone Warehouse one day saying I wanted to upgrade to the SPV, and walked out carrying an SPV. This was back in December.

Guest Gorskar Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 Well I guess they must be pretty popular, even amougst non-techies. I mean look at it this way, if its a choice between an spv, and any other phone that orange sell, which one would you go for? I know I'd choose the spv everytime ;)

Guest Firaas Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 I can't believe people still buy Nokia phones ;) Heh. Nokias are designed by geniuses for idiots. The SPV's been designed by idiots for geniuses.
