Hi.

Could someone explain to me why the topic entitled "M3100 and WM6" was closed after someone mentioned they had installed it on their phone?

Cheers,

Smiffy.

I would imagine it's because it's slightly dodgy legally

...or positively illegal

"Nobody" has a legitimate licence for WM6 yet, and the board rules state no posting about illegal software

Yep.. that's what I was saying in a sort of roundabout way ;)

i thought it was because the topic was about "does the M3100 support WM6?" and in the end the answer was yes, so there was nothing left to talk about unless it were to be discussing WM6 itself, wich would be off topic, and theres many other threads to talk about WM6 in

idk that was my guess

i dont understand tho, its illigal on modaco to share ROMs, but people here talk about xda developers, whos rules are different than mdoaco's. wouldnt it be voilating modaco's rules by giving links to xda developers and talking about their forum?

xda-developers is an awkward one as such, in the past we did not allow links to them because of the piracy rule but as they do have a good knowledge base and do help users. Just trying to ignore such a mainstream site would be impossible so we allow discussion and certain links, but direct links to dodgy posts that contain links to ROM etc are not allowed. Sometimes links can slip through but we catch most of them.

Looks like the Hermes will get WM6 anyway....

Everyone has been wondering if their device will see an update to Windows Mobile 6. In the past, very few manufacturers and carriers have gone down that path. There's a significant cost required in buying the new license and customizing it for the device and of course, testing it on the device and networks. Hopefully things will be different this time. We've just learned that Microsoft has given a free license to vendors who will upgrade their devices. So I think it's clear that Microsoft understands the frustration that all of us feel when a new OS is released and are trying to change things. It's expected that HTC will offer upgrades for any device with a keyboard - as all of you Dash/Excalibur users are already aware. Unfortunately we don't know what Motorola or Samsung plan to do about this. The ball is in the carriers and manufacturers court. Let's hope they don't drop it.

If them's the rules, then them's the rules - I just felt it was a rather draconian enforcement of them is all. After all, noone was linking to the site and irrespective of the legal status of the software, surely a general discussion of such is acceptable?

Moderating a discussion and removing links to stuff is fair enough but the complete banning of discussion of a particular topic sounds to me to be more like a case of censorship than moderation.

I agree, complete over reaction by the mods.

As far as I could tell, no one was advocating (choosing words carefully as not to get this thread closed ;) ) distributing or even linking to the offending topic. Censorship gone mad.

Ok - but as one of the guilty parties, lets not forget that Modaco wants to be popular with users, networks and MS etc... rather than seen as a subversive site for underground hackers... anyone who really wants to go find "questionable" stuff will be able to do so quite easily with google...

Personaly I would prefer a bit less censorship - but then I'm not running the forums and so not responsible for what's said - if I was maybe I'd think differently!

The forum Mods and Paul do a great job of keeping the board a welocoming place for everybody so, as I don't believe I could do beter, I'll bow to there experience.

It was me wot dunnit and for the reasons stated above.

I am naturally offended at the suggestion that I may be censorious or draconian (ouch ;) ) but at least I didn't get called a fascist !

It's a judgement call and topics like that one are tough but I would have expected any other staff member to have made the same decision.

So there :D

I wonder if this will include the Hermes and (hopefully) Wizard?

I also read this article and the references to Dash, Excalibur, Motorola and Samsung seem to hint at Smartphones rather than Pocket PCs, although it would be great to be wrong

How can anyone call someone called "Disco Stu" a Facist?

There is quite a bit of evidence hinting that HTC will release a WM6 ROM for Hermes (not sure about the Wizard, but probably).

A post by Sleuth on XDA Developers said that various US operators had said they will release the WM6 updates, but will Orange and the other UK operators?

In my opinion, it would be a good idea. People regularly upgrade handsets for the latest features from Orange. If they released a new OS update, perhaps fewer people would update the handset and it might save them money.

On the other hand, the testing and support of the new ROM would cost them money.

If it's not released by UK operators, there will be even more warranty voiding illegal activity going on over here, I'd guess.

I've emailed Orange to find out if they plan to offer an update but I've heard nothing back. Orange have been particularly tight when it comes to releasing updates in the past so I'm not holding out much hope. From reading around various sites, it sounds as though T-Mobile customers are feeling a little more hopeful.

Even if there is an official WM6 update, I will still be replacing my handset come end of contract, nice as an OS update is, you just cant beat that feeling of a shiny new device in the hand!!

Bad call on this occasion, a little harsh I think. Anyway, done now.

Overall I'd agree that the forums are well looked after.

I think this would be exactly the reason that the operators would be reluctant to issue free WM6 upgrades to their users.

If you have to upgrade to a 'shiny new device' in order to get WM6, then a lot of people, especially those who got a Vario (1) at the end of 2005 and have not yet upgraded to a Vario II might be tempted by WM6.

For those only coming up to 6 months into an 18-month contract like me, I will be keeping my fingers crossed that T-Mo UK are a progressive organisation and will be offering a WM6 Rom upgrade (at least for Vario II users! ;) )
