Coming soon...WM6 on the Hermes?

As mentioned in passing in another thread, people are starting to speculate that HTC are going to break with their tradition and offer upgrades to WM6 for hermes carriers. Note that's carriers and not consumers...

I would imagine that HTC will do (have done? ;)) a generic version and it will be up to the likes of T-Mobile \ Orange etc. on whether or not they offer the upgrade to their customers.

In the background, I would imagine Microsoft are encouraging this to be made available to the end users. I attended a Microsoft Technet roadshow recently where there was a session discussing Exchange 2007 and the intro video showed someone using a hermes with exchange. I'm not sure exactly how the 2 interact in real life but I would guess that MS want WM6 out there to help give corporate types another reason for upgrading to Exchange 2007.

Just my guess...

Smiffy.

The existence of wm6 roms for the hermes and the reports that MS have given free rights to OEM's tend to back it up... the problem is the fact that if they supply it, they have to support it- which means re-training support staff... and this applies to HTC and the networks.

Ahem...allegedly, WM6 looks much like WM5 but a bit prettier - pretty much everything is still in the same place so the amount of training required from the networks' point of view is minimal I would have thought...maybe a morning's update session (if you could even fill that). I mean let's face it, how many CS reps know how to use all the advanced functions of WM anyway (not to mention that a lot of the time, they don't know jack about the stuff and are just working from scripts...) That's beside the fact that WM6 IS coming and they're going to have to be trained up in it anyway...

Apart from that, there is the cost of new manuals etc but if everything is done from an online POV (PDF manuals and downloads etc) then the cost and time to get this stuff done would be minimal - not to mention the fact that it might even be something that a fair number would pay (a small amount) for (me included ;)).

Granted, your everyday Joe probably wouldn't bother doing the update if he had to pay for it but then again, I find that Joe doesn't buy phones like this anyway :D

Its more spending the time and money to create the automated fault-finding programs for CS to use when we phone them... you know the one where they say "is the device switched on?" and you say yes and then after a pause they say "is it working?" etc etc

The build numbers for the forthcoming WM6 roms start actually with 5.2 - which proves that WM6 is merely an update to WM5... but I can confirm from what I have seen that the visual and operational enhancements are worth it. I cannot believe anyone would close this topic if I pass on the news that PIE works a lot faster and pop email send receives are slicker... (If I am wrong then mods just let me know!)

Oh and it has an IE7 style loading swirly circle instead of the flapping windows flag ;)

Quite possibley the biggest advantage is HTML email support.

With wifi and/or fast 3g you dont see the IE7 swirling loading icon for long...

HTML email works fine with pop accounts - but exchange 2003 seems a little reticent to offer html (which seems a bit back to front)- rumours persist that you need exchange 2007 to really get the full package.

It's a pain. I use SBS2003 and so still can't get HTML email and they're unlikely to release SBS2007 (even in beta) for some time - and I doubt if the upgrade will be straightforward when they do!

Just a rom update would be nice as iam fed up with tomtom freezing the phone and the other bugs which make the phone unstable , good job the latest phone i have works and sadly its not a ms system phone .

I really don't see the carriers rushing to supply us with WM6 or even new roms, though I really hope I am wrong. The extra support needed and the phone returns alone from bricked phones due to updating alone if enough to deter them.

TomTom6 works great with WM6 (alledgely! ;))

Hi Guys

Look at the XDA-Developers forum under Hermes Upgrades, there is a community driven upgrade to WM6 being created called XDA-Live.

Apparently html email will work if you connect via imap to the exchange server 2003. Personally I am not that bothered so am leaving my eschange server set up as is.

Does the WM6 version of PIE have a 'save target as' feature, that is one of my biggest gripes with PIE on WM5?
