Guest MugiMugi Posted March 16, 2007 Report Posted March 16, 2007 Hi I'm in the process of geting a new cellphone and my debat is going between HTC TyTN and SE p990i. This phone is more encourging to get thought such things as Skype but I can live with out it. My bigest consern is more or less how the phone works as a media player. I've was told at some site ( don't remember where ) that this phone only support mono sound like all PDA's, was a bit confused here, I presume htey mee mono sound with the built in speekers, but how about a headset, will the sound still be mono ? Or was the entire statement false? Secondly how does it work as an mp3 player?, Long battery life, preferly want it to last 8+ hours if possible, And how is the sound quality, if it's just mono as stated above I presume it's bad. Also a tiny question what is really the difference between HTC TyTN and all the other models who seems to be the same phone but yet still not, One page wrote "the Cingular 8525 is a HERM100 and the TyTN is a HERM200" thought this don't tell me much. Any other usefull information about the phone is fully welcome. Thanks in advance.
Guest Phil John Posted March 16, 2007 Report Posted March 16, 2007 You're right, it's only mono when played back through the on-board speaker as there's only one of them. The only thing to be wary of is that it uses a proprietary USB headphone connector, so unless you hack the included headphones into a jack->usb adaptor (tutorial somewhere on the web I found) you're stuck with the sub-par ones supplied, or a stereo bluetooth headset (expensive). As far as battery life goes, 8 hours may be pushing it, but I'm not 100% sure - any more seasoned owners care to comment? I've only had my Vario II (TyTn) about 2 weeks, but absolutely love it - it's a damn fine piece of kit and gets a lot of admiring looks from people who've seen me using it (time to whack it on the insurance methinks!). Just waiting for my MicroSD card to arrive so I can start using it for more media-related things.

If you are willing to do a bit of work and playing around with settings and (I think) the registry, stereo bluetooth can be achieved fairly well. Herm100/200/300 are same phone - just with different key layouts, plus I think one of the US ones doesn't have the video calling camera. If you are not interested in using it as a pocket PC, and just want a phone with MP3 player, maybe not the best choice. However it is probably the best PPC phone around until the Kaiser arrives later this year. Best hint is don't get it without an unlimited (or nearly) data bundle.
