I just bought a Dopod 577w and was wondering which rom upgrade is the best for it. Please let me know which one you guys like best for stabilty, wifi, etc. Are the Qtek or Imate roms better?

I've been using the imate sp5m ROM for many months now, and I find it to be the most stable and responsive. The ONLY thing I missed was the ability to hold down the # key to go into vibrate mode, but I can live without that.

Can't really give you any specific reasons I like it, it's just treated me well with very few lock-ups or hard-resets.

Good luck,

The Imate ROMs do seem to be very stable, and free of rubbish (in my admitedly limited experience)

TBH i haven't had any issues with the O2 UK ROM really, but I haven't seen that one available for download anywhere.

I'd go for the Imate ROM myself if I was going to change

Thanks for the input, I'll try the imate rom then. Is the wifi more responsive on the imate rom? My wifi seems really sluggish and doesn't work half the time.

I found i-mate_SP5_WWE_2.5.331.2. Is this the right one?

Oh and no, that's not the correct ROM, at least not if your device is the equivalent of an HTC tornado. You would want the sp5m, not just sp5. Still a 2.5.33 I believe, just for a different device.

So, confirm yours is a Tornado, and then I'll send you the sp5m ROM if you can't find it...

Good luck,

I have the dopod 577w, same as the Imate sp5. The sp5m is like the T-mobile sda, that's not the phone I have. The dopod is a tornado according to everything I've seen.

Thanks again for the advice. I flashed the newest Imate SP5 rom and the phone runs much better now, and wifi works 100% better. I'm very glad I did it. ;)

if he would have done like you said he would have been ended with a nice paperweight. its the wrong one!!!!!!

tornado is SP5 and dopod 577w,

sp5m is sda

THat's why I told him to CONFIRM what his phone was first. Geez.

however, if you say tornado is SP5 and SDA is SP5m, then why is the SDA listed on modaco as a tornado?

Is it not more likely that the SDA is a tornado, but the dopod is NOT?

here is the list:

HTC Tornado

Variants:

HTC Hertz:

Aka Qtek 8310

i-mate SP5

Vodafone V1240

O2 XDA IQ

Dopod 577w

HTC Tempo:

Aka Qtek 8300

i-mate SP5m

T-Mobile SDA (US)

also i srewed it up a little bit too, its still the wrong rom you mentioned. tornado is the base for all models, but you should not flash a sp5m with a sp5 rom or vice versa. the phone will work but the softbuttons will be useless.

anyway, pulstar picked the right one.

WTF??? I hate this last rom, it's full of bugs, it's definitely a step backwards from the first one! (xcept for some PIE tweaks)

These are only some of the hassles I encounter in using the phone almost everyday, right out after a hard reset (did it 2 days ago), and with only 5 innocuous apps installed:

  • the phone freezes during startup at the "HTC innovation" screen. Fix: pull out battery. (frequently, it will hang the next time too)
  • Pocket IE suddendly freezes or starts running slowly, affecting the rest of the phone - the start menu won't appear, for instance. Terminating PIE won't work. Fix: reboot or wait at least 5 min for IE to finish doing what it is doing.
  • backlight: remains turned on until reboot, or loses the power settings - backlight timeout, etc.
  • keyboard: typing oftentimes will result in an undefined number of "6" keystrokes being inserted instead of the proper T9 letter, that is M, N or O
  • sounds: from the last hard reset on, MIDI files play out only in single-tone, no more polyphonic sound

    • You turn it on, but the phone uses GPRS instead when accessing internet. Fix: power-cycle the wifi, and trust me, doing it with the Comm Manager leads me to hysteria because of its slowness.
    • You turn it off, and after a while when you wake the phone (to i.e. look at the clock) it comes back on its own and sits there draining the battery. It can do that 5 or even 10 times, it's freaking.
    • Sometimes it disconnects and won't reconnect until you power-cycle the WiFi. It's not a signal-related problem. It does it even at 1 metre from the WiFi antenna.
    • When ther phone is cradled to activesync, the WiFi icon disappears and the WiFi network list goes with it. After you un-cradle the phone, the icon steadily comes back. This is preventing me from debugging apps that make use of the WiFi connection.

These reason speak for themselves, and I would like a new firmware update, be it Qtek, Imate or Vodafone.

    Has anyone got an advice?

Yikes, Ive not seen any of those issues running this rom on my t-mobile SDA.

I used to get stuck at the HTC screen during boot on both the t-mobile ROM and the Qtek ROM. Now I don't. My backlight settings are always kept, no Wifi problems, sounds are all good...etc...

Don't know why it's giving you such a hard time... ;)

Yes, it has been so from the first time after the update... so, do you know where to download the Qtek rom?

All I can say is send me your email address to notaliberal ||A.T|| earthlink.net...

Don't want to break any rules here, as I did earlier in this post. Email and we'll chat...

I've noticed a few of these problems, but not all of them. Is the Qtek rom more stable? Maybe we should start a poll or something to see what everyone thinks is the best rom for this phone regardless which brand you have.

For the record, when i did have the qtek ROM loaded, I experienced quite a few lockups during boot; Both on the HTC screen and the Windows Mobile screen.

But, that also happened a few times with the t-mobile ROM, so it could have been device issues or storage card issues, I just don't know.

Thanks,

Anyway today I've installed the new Opera 8.65 beta and used it in a WPA-protected network.

After a bit of downloading, it always manages to freeze the whole phone instantly, forcing me to pull out the battery...

(p.s. thanks notaliberal)

I'm still using the imate rom. I'm having the same problems with the wifi. I can connect no problem and surf 3 or 4 web pages and then it just stops working until I power cycle the wifi. I really need to find a rom that works well with wifi. Any ideas?

I can tell you I've never had an issue with the wifi on the imate ROM. Not once.

Perhaps it's the networks themselves, or some other setting somewhere.

I assume the tornado radio update wouldn't do anything to fix the wifi, right? Because I've installed that on top of my imate ROM.

Don't know, just a thought...

You might be on to something there... I'm not sure where to get it though.

Sorry if this was already resolved, but I'm still somewhat confused.

So will the i-mate_SP5_WWE_2.5.331.2  rom work fine on an HTC Tornado ? or is it the SP5m ?

Also WWE means it's the English language version?

Radio updates relate to the GSM radio, not the WiFi.

As for the issues, I think you're lucky ;)

Yes it will. I've flashed it on my tornado already.

WWE stands for World Wide English I believe.
