Guest mutua Posted March 20, 2007 Report Posted March 20, 2007 Hi, I have followed the setup instructions from the GPRS provider and this forum and attempted connection shows "Dialling..." then keep getting the error: "Unable to place call". Alternate error message reads: "Unable to connect. Verify you have network coverage and try again." Since other phone functions work, I do have network coverage! The settings in my SMART Smartphone 2002 are as follows: GPRS Connections: Smart GPRS Connects to: The Internet Access point: wap.ke.celtel.com User name: wap Password: [blank] Primary DNS: 0.0.0.0 Secondary DNS: 0.0.0.0 IP address: 172.030.008.050 Smart WAP GPRS Connects to: The Internet Access point: wap.ke.celtel.com User name: wap Password: [blank] Primary DNS: 0.0.0.0 Secondary DNS: 0.0.0.0 IP address: 172.030.008.050 PROXY Connections Smart WAP Proxy Connects from: The Internet Connects to: WAP Network Proxy (name:port): wap.ke.celtel.com Type: HTTP User name: wap Password: [blank] Data Connections Internet connection: Smart GPRS Work connection: None Available WAP connection: Smart WAP GPRS Secure WAP connection: None Available Internet Explorer Options Connections: Unchecked box "Automatically detect settings" Select Network: The Internet Any assistance will be highly appreciated! Guest martin Posted March 20, 2007 Report Posted March 20, 2007 Welcome mutua Do you have a top centre G displayed on the phone ? This states that you are GPRS attached. Delete all existing dialup, GPRS and proxy connections and then try the following setup which hopefully should work ;) Internet service over the GPRS network Settings-Data Connections Menu-Edit Connections GPRS connections Menu-Add Description: GPRS Internet Connects to: The Internet Access point: ke.celtel.com (or internet.ke.celtel.com) User name: internet Password: internet Primary DNS: Secondary DNS: IP address: In Settings - Data connections Internet Connection: Celtel Internet In Internet Explorer, Menu-Options-Connections Untick 'Auto detect settings' Set 'Select network: 'The Internet' WAP service over the GPRS network Settings-Data Connections Menu-Edit Connections GPRS connections Menu-Add Create GPRS connection. Guest mutua Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 Thanks for the leads but for some reason the same problem persists, Error: "Unable to place call" and alternate error: "Unable to connect. Verify you have network coverage and try again." So far the strange thing I notice is that the phone keeps automatically changing my passwords for the internet and wap connections to a mysterious 16 character password after I press the "Done" soft key when settings complete. Just wondering if the following may be relevant:- the GPRS connection works on my Nokia 3100 phone with the following settings: Active settings: Celtel WAP Settings' name: Celtel WAP Homepage: http://portal.ke.celtel.com Data bearer: GPRS Bearer settings - GPRS access point: wap.ke.celtel.com IP address: 172.30.8.50 Authentication type: Normal Login type: Automatic User name: wap Password: BLANK MY CURRENT SETTINGS ON SMARTPHONE AS FOLLOWS, YIELD SAME ERROR MESSAGES: 1. I do you have a top centre G displayed on the phone, hence I'm GPRS attached. 2. Guest Confucious Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 Sorry, just a quick couple of points: 1) password changes to 16 * whatever you put in - this is a security measure so people can't see how long your password is - provided you have made sure you have typed in the correct password it will be OK and nothing to worry about. 2) WAP IP address - should be blank - the IP address on the N*kia is the proxy address - delete the IP address on your phone and WAP should work I don't know your provider so am talking generalities here but it is possible that your account only supprts WAP and when you remove the IP address WAP will work but interbet access wont. Are you sure they provide full internet access? Good luck
Guest martin Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 Do you get the top centre G as displayed in this picture ? http://www.modaco.com/The-official-O2-XDA-...ad-t253183.html The top centre G indicates that GPRS is activated on your account and that you have successfully completed a GPRS attach to the SGSN (Serving GPRS support node) on phone startup. If the top centre G is active and you get connection fail then the problem is with the following. Access point: User name: Password: You could also try the username and password as blank. When you are successfully connected the small G next to the signal strength bar with stay active. If all APN's (+ associated username and password) fail then there could be a problem with the network so it might be worth asking customer services if there is a GPRS outage. Have you tried your SIM in another phone that already had GPRS working in the past ?
Guest mutua Posted March 24, 2007 Report Posted March 24, 2007 Hi, some progress: have now reached the point where it indicates "Finding site..." then ends up on "alert: The page you are looking for cannot be found." The network provider now says I should use the ke.celtel.com APN and leave all user name, password, dns, and IP addresses blank. He seemed less sure of the proxy settings, but here's what I have: 1. Celtel Internet and also Celtel WAP settings Connects to: The Internet Access point: ke.celtel.com BLANK everything else 2. Celtel Proxy settings Connects from: The Internet Connects to: WAP network Proxy (name:port): 172.030.008.050:8080 Type: HTTP Username: BLANK Password: BLANK 3. Internet Explorer Select network: WAP Network Note: 1. When I change the IE network settings to "The Internet" it skips the "Finding Site..." stage and quickly goes to "alert: The page you are looking for cannot be found." 2. The Celtel guy says he successfully configured an i-mate K-JAM as follows: Connection name: Celtel Access Select a modem: Select Cellular Line (GPRS) Access point name: ke.celtel.com Username: BLANK Password: BLANK Domain: BLANK Proxy click: "This network connects to the internet" However of course I'm using the Smartphone 2002 which has different menu items. Will report if/when he gets me some new information. 3. I do have the G displayed top centre of the screen, and when I activate IE to access a site it displays the small G next to the signal strength bar which stays active. 4. GPRS is active on my Nokia 3100 on the same network. I really appreciate all your help thus far! Blessings! Mutua
Guest mutua Posted March 24, 2007 Report Posted March 24, 2007 Hi, now it shows "Finding Site..." and ends up with "alert: The page you are looking for cannot be found." My current information: 1. I do have the centre top G on display. 2. I do have the small G next to the signal strength bar active 3. The Celtel guy says I should use the APN ke.celtel.com and leave username, password, dns, IP adresses blank and I've done so for both the Celtel Internet and Celtel WAP settings. 4. Celtel Proxy settings same as before: Description: Celtel Proxy Connects from: The Internet Connects to: WAP network Proxy (name:port): 172.030.008.050:8080 Type: HTTP Username: Password: 5. Internet Explorer settings Select Network: WAP Network NB: 1. If I change it to "The Internet" it skips the "Finding Site..." stage and quickly says "alert: The page you are looking for cannot be found." 2. The celtel guy will do some further research and will report if it gets to work. I do appreciate all the help I can get, and welcome any further suggestions. Blessings! Mutua
Guest mutua Posted March 28, 2007 Report Posted March 28, 2007 PROBLEM SOLVED! All that was needed was to make the access point ke.celtel.com and to leave username and password blank in the Celtel Internet settings. Seems the problem was connecting onto the Celtel website/server. When I go to google or other websites it works! Thanks a million for all the help and God bless you all! Mutua
