New Mail Alert Screen

As we know that call plugin has an event called "nocalls" that allows it to remain hidden until there is a missed call which subsequently triggers an alert. I was wondering if there is a similar event for messages. Say, I get a new SMS and my homescreen displays the alert saying I have new mail, otherwise just stay hidden.
