Unabel to obrain server assigned IP address problem

I get this irritating message around 2 or 3 times a day.

It could be any time, even while syncing successfully in the cradle.

If my phone wakes up, and this has happened while 'asleep', invariably the phone is frozen and needs a soft reset. (any alarms/notifications etc that should have happened during that time didn't, obviously).

I have searched and searched for the solution to this.

Have tried the diable advanced network functionality

Have tried the registry edit solution:

Change the "EnableDHCP" registry key to "0"

Have tried the use fixed IP address solution:

IP address: 169.254.2.1

Subnet: 255.255.255.0

Default GW: 169.254.2.2

I have even tried:

1. In "Settings" "Network Cards" " "Remote-NDIS Host" "IP Address" tab, CHECK "Use specific IP address" and set it to 169.254.2.1, then set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0

Leave the default gateway blank (some posts suggest setting the default gateway to 169.254.2.2 - I did not find this necessary).

2. Now move to the "Name Servers" tab and clear any settings you may have set for the DNS and/or WINS then tap "OK" until everything is saved and closed.

3. In "Settings", "Connections", "Connections" (yes, again)"Proxy settings" CHECK "This network connects to the Internet" but UNCHECK "This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet" then tap "OK" until everything is saved and closed

4. Restart your PPC

None of these have worked for me, can anyone suggest a solution please

Device (Vario II - WM5 (as out of the box)

Activesync 4.5 on Windows XP

All functions on phone working successfully ie wifi, gprs, activesync etc etc

Well, that fix will only do anything when using the device with Activesync.

Which network are you on?

Does it happen when using WiFi?

I've had this very same thing on both my FS N560 and Orange SPV M700, although neither have ever locked up because of it. It remains an extreme annoyance.

It seems to be related to using an Exchange Server for Poutlook (or possibly even just a scheduled send/receive?)- even though I have mine scheduled for manual sync during off peak times, that seems to make no difference. If the phone is off, I get the message a number of times a day or when the alarm goes off in the morning. (I keep the phone off during the night!). Of course, the N560 was always 'off' when out of Bluetooth range from my mobile phone, so I got the message more often with that.

I haven't tried leaving the phone radio on 24/7, but suspect that might cure it.

"Have you unticked the "enable enhanced networking fucntionaltity" in Start, settings, Connections, USB-TO-PC?"

Yes, I tried that and it made no difference

"related to using an Exchange Server for Poutlook (or possibly even just a scheduled send/receive?"

Don't use exchange server at all, or a scheduled send/receive for email or anything else. All other progs (rss readers & weather etc) are set to only download data manually.

"I haven't tried leaving the phone radio on 24/7, but suspect that might cure it."

Mine is on 24/7 but it still occurs.

In fact this is the most annoying one as it will sometimes then freeze the device overnight, so first thing, having overslept as the alarm didn't go off, then soft reset is followed by a flurry of alarms, reminders, text messages etc etc. I have used S K Tools to clear outdated & duplicate notifications.

"Which network are you on?

Does it happen when using WiFi?"

I'm on T-Mobile flex & web & walk

It could happen anytime, anywhere, but is not in any way predictable eg every x hours or just after a particular event.

As I say, it's normally only a minor annoyance, but when it freezes the device then obviously this is more serious as calls/alarms/reminders etc are of no use.

Before anyone suggests a hard reset I did that about 3 days ago. Completely fresh device, no third party software, no tweaks, just set up activesync (no probs) synced contacts & calendar and set up wifi (no probs)

And it still happened. The really annoying thing is that the 'fixes' I've quoted above appear to work for everyone else but me, one or the other usually does the trick. So, that's why I'm asking for advice.

Same for me- on N560 and M700. Happened after a fresh hard reset on both, with no added apps except Resco to apply the reg hacks.

BUT, it didn't happen after I reset the N560 prior to selling it, and without doing a PC partnership, so in my case I still suspect Activesync as the culprit.

I agree entirely, I did the 'fake server' trick thinking that this was the culprit, that AS was starting itself up, and then not being connected was giving me this grief, but that didn't help either. No AS starting up, but still the message. However, not syncing is not an option!

Oh well, maybe someone will come up with a solution.
