4Gb cards

There are an awful lot of 4Gb SD/miniSD cards available on the internet. Many of them claim to be compatible with a lot of devices which just don't support them. The problem, according to the SD Association web site, is that anything above 2Gb is actually SDHC, which, as has been established elsewhere, is not yet supported by PPCs/Smartphones. There are plenty of threads on this site with a lot of people devoting a lot of time to trying to find a workaround. Most of the threads seem to end up coming to the same conclusion, namely, until our devices support SDHC it just isn't worth it. If you do get your device to recognise the card it will only recognise 2Gb of it or it will be wholly unstable and cause crashes or lose data.

I, like many others, was caught out by the claims that the card I bought was compatible with my PPC. If you read the small print on the sites you will invariably see that it includes a statement to the effect that it is up to you to confirm that the card is actually compatible with your device. I now have a 4Gb mini SD card, which, due to its light weight, isn't even any good as a paperweight! I am awaiting delivery of 2 x 2Gb cards on both of which I shall load all the storage card installed applications and use the remaining space on one for music and on the other for movies. An expensive mistake to make, one which, hopefully, this topic will enable others to avoid having to experience the expense and frustration I experienced.

Sorry.. but you are mistaken

there are 4GB SD cards... and 4GB SDHC cards.. they are not the same thing!!!!!!!

AFAIK there ar NO 4Gb Mini SD cards that aren't SDHC but, like psionandy points out, there are certainly 4Gb SD cards - you just have to be careful when you by one to make sure it's nott SDHC.

I got mine from MobyMemory of £22 (inc P&P) and it works fine in my Uni - one point tho, if you don't have one already, it's worth buying their USB card reader - nearly all existing card readers will NOT read 4Gb SD cards (will see as 2Gb and corrupt them) and it is safe to asume that unless you have bought a card reader gauranteed to read 4Gb cards then your reader won't work with a 4Gb card.

I really don't know if mine is, I got mine when I got my firt 4Gb Card (£99 off eBay!) and it was the only one where they guaranteed 4Gb capability as my card wouldn't work with any of my other readers.

The one they advertise now here is high speed compatable. It looks very simillar to mine but not wuite the same (mine has a flap not a removable lid where you insert the card.

So I guess the answer to your question is yes! the ones you buy now from Moby are.

Please, don't take my word for it, this site is the official site of the SD Association organised by SanDisc, Panasonic et al. They only make the things and set the industry standards......

If you have managed to find a way to get a device to use a 4GB "SD" card please share it with the rest of us, because a lot of people would be most gratefull!

Actually the SD Association site says "* SD Host Products can use only SD Memory Card 2GB or less." but has a vital qualifying footnote: " * These figures vary depending on each individual product. " I have an A-Data 4MB SD card in a Toshiba CF-R1N (late 2003, I think before SDHC was specified) which is fully (4GB) recognised - FAT32.

i too have a 4gb Mini sd card non SDHC and it works fine with my card reader fine with my MP3 players and is really really crap with my qtek 8310.

In that case me and my friends on aximsite are all using impossible SD cards that don't exist in their axims... I'm using a 4GB SD card that doesn't exist in my axim.. I can't use an SDHD card that does exist in my axim I've tried that and it doesn't work. But the SD card (4GB) that you claim doesn't exist has been working just fine in my axim x50v for the last 4 months. It also worked in a friends digital camera which doesn't support SDHD cards either.It came from 7dayshop btw.. and they sell these cards that you claim don't exist at a very competitive price.. They also sell the cards that you say do exist as well.

I went the site you linked to and it told me

SD Memory Cards are currently available in several capacities, and new 2, 4 and 8GB cards are on the way

That information was correct as of December 2003.. so I think it's safe to say the 4GB SD cards have arrived by now... although if you're convinced they don't exist then there's nothing I can do to help you there.

To make it work you put the sd card in the sd card slot.. the trick is to make sure you use an sd card and not an HDSD card

we are talking about MINISD not SD cards which is what the quote about 4gbsd cards not existing but as I have stated I have a 4GB MINISD so this whole threads is a waste of space its dead simple

4GB MINISD cards do exist they just DO NOT work with all mobile phones as claimed to do so by the manufactures.

I don't think the one from MobyMemory is SDHC, it's just MiniSD..

The 4GB miniSD from mobymemory is NOT SDHC. It has been confirmed working in a Typhoon, Tornado and Wizard

i saw a response from xda dev i think it was from ppc doc that he is able to use a 4gb minisd in his asus p525 and that at that all he did was format the card using an xda mini and it worked just forgot to ask him on what brand of 4gb minisd he was using

Interesting, I tried 4 different card readers and NONE of them did, I rang a few suppliers who couldn't guarantee that there ones would and bought the one from Moby which worked fine, maybe you've just beeen lucky? The built in reader on my new (a couple of months old) Dell laptop corrupts my 4Gb card so I use the Moby card reader and it works fine.

What readers have you tried (and presumably written to the card without corrupting as well) that work?
