Guest ashusharma Posted April 8, 2007 Report Posted April 8, 2007 (edited) Hi, I have an i-Mate SP5m (QTek 8300, HTC Tornado). I've read posts on this forum about reassigning te shortcut for the Pocket IE round hardware button the phone (wich currently goes to www.imate.com). I have tried following the steps mentioned. However: 1. After connecting the phone to my computer and navigating to \Windows using Windows Explorer, the checkboxes for "ReadOnly" and "System" in the properies for Short_AP1.lnk come up disabled. 2. Using CENotepad did not help - It opens up the file and shows its contents but is unable to save the changes back to the phone. It asks me if I want to save changes when I close the file but does not actually save when I click "Yes". Also, it does not close the file. 3. If I copy the file to the computer and then modify it using Notepad - on trying to copy the file back to \Windows on the phone, I get the error - 'Cannot copy - please chheck if the file is readonly or if you have the correct permission'. 4. Using Total Commander, I was once able to change the shortcut to \Windows\iexplore.exe http://www.google.com, but the shortcut now has double-quotes around the whole thing and so when I press the round button, the phone locks up after showing the message that it was unable to locate the file "\Windows\iexplore.exe http://www.google.com" ;) . Now I am unable to change it to "\Windows\iexplore.exe" (i.e. without any site mentioned - even that would have been helpful). 5. Total Commander is now unable to modify the file's attributes and is unable to change the shortcut's target as well :D The file now does not come up as 'Read Only' in its properties (when seen through the computer), however I am unable to remove the 'System' attribute. With that attribute 'on', I am unable to copy a modified Short_AP1.lnk file to the phone :( Now, even if I press the button on the phone by mistake, the phone shows that message and locks up and I have to remove the battery :) Could anyone please suggest some way of modifying the Short_AP1.lnk file. I don't know how everyone else has been able to do it so simply (without removing the 'System' attribute from the file). PS: The phone is completely unlocked - not bound to any network and I am also able to install applications to the phone. Edited April 8, 2007 by ashusharma
Guest Mancom Posted April 8, 2007 Report Posted April 8, 2007 sorry, but it looks like the phone is not completly unlocked. Guest dm251x Posted April 11, 2007 Report Posted April 11, 2007 sorry, but it looks like the phone is not completly unlocked. Mancom Your phone is completely unlocked, just with some (probably newer) ROM versions, you can't edit ROM/system files directly. But here is the best solution that I have come up with. I can't post the link directly, but I'll tell you how to navigate to the file. First, go to mobile.surrealnetworks.com. Press "applications for SDA". Scroll down to TCPMP. Aside from TCPMP, there are two other files listed, TCPMP Hot Keys Device, and TCPMP Hot Keys SD. These latter two files contain a CAB, w/ xml to change the Short_AP* keys to point to TCPMP, whether on the device or SD card. The XML can be changed to make them point to whatever, and I'm sure you could change the Short_AP1 to point back to explorer or whatever you want. good luck.

Actually, even easier, if it is just the Short_AP1 that you want to restore to internet explorer, probably just run this cab, and it should do the trick...I guess.SN_MSN_WAP_Key.cab
Guest ashusharma Posted April 11, 2007 Report Posted April 11, 2007 Actually, even easier, if it is just the Short_AP1 that you want to restore to internet explorer, probably just run this cab, and it should do the trick...I guess. ;) On trying to install this .cab, I get the following error: "Installation was unsuccessful. The program or setting cannot be installed because it does not have sufficient system permissions." I will try the other method mentioned (through "mobile.surrealnetworks.com").
Guest ashusharma Posted April 11, 2007 Report Posted April 11, 2007 The other method (through the CABs from mobile.surrealnetworks.com) didn't work either ;) Thanks for the links though! Does anyone know of a method to change 'system' files with the new ROM?

Does anyone know of a method to change 'system' files with the new ROM? hmmm, are you sure this is really application-unlocked? Did you do the registry changes and run the SDA_ApplicationUnlock?
Guest ashusharma Posted April 11, 2007 Report Posted April 11, 2007 hmmm, are you sure this is really application-unlocked? Did you do the registry changes and run the SDA_ApplicationUnlock? I haven't run those files, but I am quite sure that the phone is application-unlocked - I live in India and here GSM phones are never locked to any carrier (such as T-Mobile SDA in the US). Also, I am able to install any arbitrary (unsigned) application on the phone. BTW, today I upgraded the phone's OS (to 2.6.331.2) and it has reset the button to http://www.imate.com. I tried the CAB files you had mentioned earlier, again - but got the same error again ;)

Application unlock is different, and is neccesary to do lots of cool things. I highly recommend it, and you will be able to do much more customization. But it's up to you. See the Tornado forum sticky for a post with detailed instructions and attached programs to help.
Guest Mancom Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 As I was saying before phone is NOT completly unlocked! Get regeditSTG.exe, change policy keys, run SDA unlock, and then try. Mancom
Guest ashusharma Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 Thank you both! I'll try the unlocking methods you've suggested. Thanks again.
