Guest Chimpanzee Posted April 8, 2007 Report Posted April 8, 2007 Does anyone have any opinions on what the best satnav software is? I'm pretty interested in iGO 8 but does anyone know if there's a trial version available? Thanks for your help.
Guest Posted April 8, 2007 Report Posted April 8, 2007 Does anyone have any opinions on what the best satnav software is? I'm pretty interested in iGO 8 but does anyone know if there's a trial version available? Thanks for your help. Personally I don't think there's anything to beat TomTom 6. I have tried Navigon (good but no speed camera support), iGo 2006 (basic speed camera support and an annoying ability to leave spoken instructions to the very last minute) but neither can match TomTom. I also used to use CoPilot 5 which was good and supported speed cameras (but they were a pain to update the database). I have not tried CoPilot 6 (the latest version) which supports TomTom OV2 files for speed cameras so that is a viable alternative. As far as any other contenders, i haven't tried them so I cannot comment! As far as demo versions are concerned - you're out of luck, none of the satnav vendors offer demos. The only way to try before you buy is to download from certain filesharing networks which shall remain nameless - not gonna go into it as it is against forum rules! ;) If you want to check out reviews for the various contenders, you could try the PocketGPSWorld site.
Guest Dr_StrangeTrick Posted April 9, 2007 Report Posted April 9, 2007 Hi Chimpanzee I use MioMap which is the same as the IGo 2006 SE Everton2004 is right when he says it leaves instructions to the last minute but this can be altered very easily (the whole package can be amended if you want) and if you look at the roundabout icon on the screen that has the right exit number in anyway so don't mark this against it. The safety camera's in IGo are second to none as its the only package I know that supports camera direction and as PockeyGPSWorld is updating more and more of its cameras with directional information this makes IGO even better as it will not warn you if the camera is facing in the wrong direction (I.E. speed camera on the other side of the road) As far as navigation goes both IGo and TomTom use the same maps, I have them both and they both make the same mistakes at exactly the same points so you can discount this as well. You will have to check out the reviews and read more than one to get a good idea and check out other sites like GpsPassion Let us know what you go for.
Guest Neil5459 Posted April 9, 2007 Report Posted April 9, 2007 iGo looks good, but is almost impossible to buy as a standalone. It ships as bundled software with some PDA navigation packages. V8 is rumoured to be close to release, but no word as to whether it will be sold as a stand alone software package, though the announcements tend to suggest it will. TomTom and Co-Pilot both have plusses and minuses, but most people who express a preference favour TomTom (even a number of O2 Orbit users who got CPL free switch to TomTom)
Guest Dr_StrangeTrick Posted April 9, 2007 Report Posted April 9, 2007 Buy from Expansys If you live in the US then you can get On Course Navigator 6 (I-Go for US) on a 30 full refund!!
Guest Chimpanzee Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 Cheers for your help everyone. I am currently using TomTom 6 and it seems pretty good. It's anoying that some of the most useful features are by subscription only which i think is a bit of a rip-off. Hopefully iGO 8 will be available for download so i can try that out. Thanks again.
