A thought re unlocking for development

I know this is related to the other post, but I thought this comment may deserve a new post..... feel free to move it though if you think otherwise.

Anyway, when I uses the Orange unlock before, it automatically made my phone connect to GPRS and download the update (or whatever it is that unlocks the phone). I did NOT have to even press a button to accept or connect or anything.

So, my point is, if Orange can get our phones to dial in by sending some sort of message, surely that means they could get our phones to send data, hence violating the privacy of the contents of our phones..... or worse, malicious users could use this method to send viruses etc

Let me know your thoughts, cheers,

Rossy

Orange probably can as you signed a contract (maybe?), however under the DPA they wouldn't be able to do anything with it...

As for viruses using a similar process, they would need privelidged access to run on SmartPhone. Only Orange can provide (not Baltimore/Verisign) this....

This is not a new concern. The same applies to any connected device, and even some unconnected ones. For instance, do you know there are speed cameras that log registration plates of everyone? Major privacy concern.

With software, you can't look inside to see if you trust it. This is partly why open-source is becoming very popular, anyone has the power to look for these potenial invasions of privacy.

You PC is exactly the same.
