M600 Wireless radio

Hi all,

This may be a bit of a silly question, but worth asking.

I use my M600 in the office and like to know when I receive new emails through exchange. Obviously the device turns off after 5 minutes or so and sadly when it does it appears that the wireless radio turns off too - hence i'd never get an email until I syncronize manually over the wireless. Is there a way of keeping the wireless radio on while having the device with it's screen off - in the interest of saving some of that precious battery life?

If anyone can help it would be hugely appreciated.

Not possible I'm afraid, unless you have a power supply hooked up, and you leave it powered on.

The WLAN radio turns off as soon as the device goes into standby because of the large battery drain it uses. Can you use GPRS for Exchange syncing, or is the data cost too prohibitive?

Yeah not only is it cost prohibitive (I have no special GPRS tariff - just the standard orange one) but it's also a technical problem. Our exchange server isn't currently in any kind of DMZ so there is no external access to the server apart from when you're on internal wireless.

What would be the best way (or which design model) of setting exchange up so that it can be accessed externally? Plus then how would I configure the phone to connect to it? I can't find any half decent guides on how to set it up!

As a side, i'm also having a spot of bother with my connections at the moment. If I go on my PDA to try to set the work connection as "This network connects to the Internet", the checkbox always clears after I click ok and go back into it. This results in being able to syncronize my email while using the wireless however when I try to use the Internet for browsing, it attempts to connect to GPRS even though the wireless is enabled! Errrrm...

For Exchange Server to accessible for external Push email, you need to be running Exchange Server 2003 SP2; if you are, then it can produce the necessary certificates for the PDA to connect with, though the firewall settings would need tweaking.

I'm no expert on this at all, but some of the guys on 4Winmobile (see my sig) have set this up successfully and could advise if needed.

If that's no good, then your only option would be to take a power supply to the office, and keep the M600 powered on; there are utilities that will allow you to assign a button for 'screen-off' so the device looks as if it is off, but remains powered up.

Another option would be to use ActiveSync, if yuor office allows this. Once a partnership is set up, you can use ActiveSync over Bluetooth, which does work when the device is powered down- it turns on in the background at the set interval, checks for messages, then powers down again. The only thing you see is the Bluetooth LED flashing while it connects, then if set, the Message LED will flash if there are new messages.
