A quick guide for new SPV users

I probably wouldn't be the best person for this job, but I was just reading cepheus1's article about a guide for users new to the SPV, and I thought that I'd have a crack at it.

1 - You can put any music as your ringtone so long as it is a .wav file. Use a converter (search on Google or some other search engine to find the appropriate converter [i don't know of any good ones]) and put the file into smartphone/ipsm/aplication data/sounds. YOU CANNOT PUT THEM ON YOUR SD CARD.

I don't know of many good ringtone sites gut you can get a few from www.cbcox.org.uk

2 - You can find signed software at www.handango.com/orange-cobrand DON'T BUY IT ANYWHERE ELSE.

3 - If you want to de-certify your phone so that it can run uncertified apps such as Doom and a GameBoy emulator, refer to http://www.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=1992

4 - With IA album you can look through your pictures easily, you can resize pictures automatically to fit your home screen and you can take video (apparently about 4 fps, but I haven't used it).

5 - All-Explorer is a useful program that most people seem not to be able to do without. A lot of people have trouble with the automatic registration, so I suggest that you do the manual registration, and you should have the code back within 24hours. If you do decide to use the automatic registration, you must be connected to GPRS prior to doing the registration.

P.S. you can use All-Explorer to find out how much space you have on your SD card and also your remaining battery power as a percentage.

To find battery power, highling SmartPhone and click the menu softkey, press one for file and five for properties.

To find out how much space you have remaining on your SD card, highlight Storage Card and press the menu softkey, then 1 and 5.

THE STORAGE SPACE SHOWN IN ABOUT IS ONLY THAT OF THE PHONE, NOT THE SD CARD

6 - You can use your SPV to view movies if you want. If you follow the advice given in http://www.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=787 you will have a much smaller file on your SD card that will run better on your phone.

If you want to make a playlist, follow the advice in http://www.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=714

If you want a bigger screen on your Media Player, download the Advanced Skin from http://www.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=714 and copy the three .gifs and the .skn file into the SmartPhone/windows folder about 10mins after you last used WMP and it should work. If, when you pause, the stop icon appears in the middle of the screen, you copied the files too soon after you last used Windows Media Player.

You can find more large WMP Skins at http://www.frostassociates.co.uk/spv/

I don't know what resolution they are but I will post when I find out.

The WMP skin is deleted on each re-boot of the phone, so I suggest you keep a copy of them on your SD card. If you want them to stay on permanently, refer to the thread http://www.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=2004

If you want to change your background, you can get a picture from anywhere you want, most formats, but you should convert it to 176 X 180 pixels, because if a picture is too big for the SPV homescreen, instead of resizing it, it will just take a section of the picture (i.e. If a picture is four times the correct size, it will take one quarter of the picture and use it as the backbround). If you want to automatically resize it, you can use IA Album (metioned earlier in this thread).

If you want to put a new theme on your phone, which changes the layout, as opposed to just the background picture, you can get loads of them from http://www.smartphony.org/stories.php?topic=32

Some of them are French, but there are also some in English. If you download one of these, you must open the folder, place the .home.xml file and the background image in the Smartphone/ISPM/Application Data/Home folder. Then when you want to set the theme, go into Settings-Home Screen, change the Home Screen Layout to the .xml file you want to use, and the Background Image to the background picture that came with the theme.

NOTE: You cannot use other backgrounds with a theme, you have to use the one provided.

If you want to learn how to make your own .xml homescreens, go to http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default....2homescreen.asp

Here there is a very detailed guide to making your own .xml homescreens.

I hope this guide helps some of those people who are stuck or having trouble finding information on a problem they are having. Good luck with your SPV, once it's set up the way you want it it's gotta be the best phone out there.

Reading through, this has been pretty useful, only thing is that most of the useful links mentioned are broken!? can anyone sort that out?? ;)

Most of the links are irreparable I'm afraid.

Some old MoDaCo threads will have been deleted with the forum upgrade and Smartphony split into Mobinaute & LeMondeDuSkin.

In fact a lot of the advice is rather out-of-date. There are many other recommended software sites now than just Handango. The SPV will also play MIDI ringtones. Smart Explorer is better than the All-Locations version. etc etc

You will find more comprehensive and up-to-date advice in the FAQs & Articles sections here and pinned to the top of each other section.

Good hunting though ! ;)

Above post edited please refrain from using bad language when posting on the site.

Regarding your comment the first post was correct at the time it was written.

The first post was written 2 months after the initial launch of the SPV which was the first Smartphone on the market.

It was only after numerous updates since this post was created, that ringtones on a storage card became possible.
