Video encoder settings for optimal playback using xvid?

I recently purchased a Samsung Blackjack and I'm trying to figure out what are some good bitrate settings for encoding a video using the xvid codec. Actually I don't necessarily need to use xvid if there is a more optimal (in terms of quality versus space) codec that someone could recommend.
