Orange M3100 (HTC hermes) USB activesync issues.

Hi first time poster here so apologies if I'm posting in the wrong bit.

I've had a number of issues with M3100 and Orange,

number 1 was no MSN messenger, (sorted thanks to folks here ;)

Second was Activesync being initially very intermittent then completely conking out.

Having tried all the solutions i could find namely hard reset, untick usb advanced, reload and update activesync another hard reset,a soft reset, throw phone out window, bung stuff on it using micro SD adapter, buy a new sync usb cable...etc,etc.

I had yet another random thought, I was interfacing via a usb port extender and a hub. (both externally powered) , the extenders work fine with everything else i own from printers through scanners to webcams and my other two phones (nokia and erricson). but as soon as I plugged the USB cable from my m3100 phone directly into a motherboard usb port it all seems to work fine. even with the "advanced connection" ticked in usb connection settings on the phone.

Plugging it back via any form of port extender or usb port doubler (i have several types) and it conks out. Seems to me the M3100 wants an exclusive USB port without anything else sharing.

So i wonder if for some folks the issue could be the usb ports browning out as the phone is afterall usually charging as well as trying to talk. or simply somthing to do with the M3100 not liking sharing a usb port with other devices.

Just a thought...

Many thanks also to folks here for advice in the fourms for software for the device and technical hints. (TMPC, resco, torch and wifi today are all essential imho)

Cheers

AndyBat.

Hi AndyBat, welcome to the forum

I must admit I've not actually connected my Hermes variant (Vario II) via the USB2 hub as it doesn't actually need USB2 - strangely its only USB1.1

I have a couple of rarely used 1.1 ports, one of which I'm happy to exclusively allocate to the VII. It might solve your problem if you have one available.

:D

My M3100 sits in a docking cradle attached to a powered USB 2.0 hub and syncs just fine.

The only problem I have is that it won't charge when the computer is switched off, even though the hub is AC powered, UNLESS I unplug the hub from the computer.

This has got to be a problem with the hub, as my old one worked fine until I used the wrong AC adaptor and set it alight

This is an issue I've read other people having so I followed some instructions I found elsewhere on Modaco, If somebody can find the link I'd be happy, I can't remember what I searched for now.

A couple of rules are:

  1. Once you have a successful USB connection do not change the hub port you are using
  2. After the first time you have made a successful USB connection, disconnect and power-down your PC and Phone.
  3. To get the initial USB connection you might try changing religion, or making a small sacrifice to your deity of choice.
  4. Otherwise try combining AS uninstalls with PC and phone power-down-up cycles.
