Sending and Receiving Japanese Messages in the US

Hello,

I would like to be able to send and receive email written in Japanese. I have a Japanese AU by KDDI cell phone but it can't be used with a provider in the US, right? I have an Axim x50v PDA which can probably do this, but I want to be able to send and receive messages anywhere, and I assume you can only do that with a cell phone? Do any US cell phones support Japanese input? It looks like KDDI Wireless will not have Japanese phones in America until June at the earliest. I would prefer not to spend hundreds of dollars on this unless I have to. Should I look for an old Windows Mobile phone on ebay and try to add Japanese input support to it? Thank you for your time.
