Guest crazyc Posted April 30, 2007 Report Posted April 30, 2007 Apparently there is now a AKU3 (WM5) upgrade available for the M3100 on the Orange business web site for anyone not wishing to risk the warranty and try WM6. Not tried it myself as it would be a retrograde step, but may be of use to others. http://www.business.orange.co.uk/ser...0441349 15191

Guest crazyc Posted May 2, 2007 Report Posted May 2, 2007 So can anyone say whether it's worth actually updating to this yet? Matt If you are still on the Orange original ROM then probably, as you will have a better radio element and there are no doubt some bug fixes. If you have moved onwards and upwards then noooooooo. (except for warranty purposes)
Guest Sadlybrokeboy Posted May 2, 2007 Report Posted May 2, 2007 Here's an update for you - updated the ROM and have one warning for you all! If your like me and backup your data daily with something like SPB Backup. If you go to this upgrade, and then try and restore the data ESPECIALLY the PIM data - you won't be able to, you'll get some "Not enough memory" messages when you try and sync your data, and you won't be able to open the contacts data either. Just a warning, apart from that - all went fine and seems fine! Might be brave and try WM6 at some point... Thanks for the heads up on this guys! Matt
Guest mrplatypus Posted May 14, 2007 Report Posted May 14, 2007 I have a brand new m3100 and have a few questions on this "upgrade": 1) How would I know if the upgrade is already on my device? (I know it probably isn't, how do I check? what should the settings be pre and post the upgrade) 2) What if anything goes wrong? (I do not have orange care or anything like that from anyone) 3) What is the benefit of the upgrade - What exactly are the differences over WM5? - Would I see anything different??

Hi there, I upgraded my M3100 with the Orange Rom and all went well: it takes about half an hour or so and its really really important that you have backed things up first - guess who didn't make a note of the software he had installed first? Still, to find out if you need to upgrade, goto Start -> Settings -> System -> About and take a look at the version: I've upgraded and it says OS 5.1.465 (Build 15673.3.3.1). Your PDA, if not updated will not have 3.3.1 at the end of the version number. This is an 'official' Orange update so my guess is that if it goes wrong and you end up with an expensive but tastefully designed door-stop, it should be covered by warranty - but you'd probably be best asking Orange about that first. Apart from a green 'Microsoft Direct Push Technology' splash screen on bootup, there aren't any major differences to see: there is better support for bluetooth networking and HSDPA support has now been added - nice and fast mobile internet even in areas where you don't have a 3G coverage. I'd upgrade personally if you are still running the original version of the ROM that the phone came shipped with - its unlikely that any phones being sold currently would have this update pre-installed so you probably don't have it. Only thing is - back everything up and if you have twenty-thousand programs installed, make sure you still have the CAB's somewhere to reinstall them later...

Can anyone tell me if they've actually managed to make the modem over bluetooth work? I bought the M3100 for 3G speeds with my laptop while on the road and it's never ever worked. If so, I'd take the risk of upgrading the ROM, but I'm not particularly sure of all of this stuff, so there'd have to be an incentive better than general or vague improvements. Thanks for any help you can give me.

In general, you need to be running XP with the Widcomm bluetooth stack (the Microsoft one as favoured by Sony and others does not work). There are workarounds if are running the Microsoft stack. If you have the Widcomm stack, call Orange and get them to sort it out, there's no reason why it shouldn't work.
