Orange SMS to USA

I'm unable to send SMS text messages from the UK (Orange) to the USA (T-Mobile).

I have an SPV C550 on the Orange network. I can receive texts from the USA, but can't reply. I send the message, but the person just doesn't receive it at the other end (waiting for bill to see if I get charged for it!). I've called Orange, but they simply say that it should be working. They have confirmed to me that I have international calling activated on my account. I know that I have the number right because I can simply call her from the handset no problem.

I've tried googling it and found some information here, but no solution. Anyone able to help out?
