S710 Mobile 6 / AS 4.5 Sync Problem

Hello, all,

Long time reader first time poster. After many years my Imate JAM finally died on me (might have something to do with the numerous drops I put it through) so I picked up a HTC S710 and Active Sync 4.5. I sync the device with my PC at home and also with my PC at work. Everything works when I sync at home but for some reason I am not able to get it to sync at work.

Plugging in the phone to USB I see the "Local Area Connection 5" icon pop up in the taskbar.

Next the Sync window starts up and after a bit I get "Active Sync cannot connect to the Win Mobile device...

Clicking trough the "Troubleshoot The Problem" window I get all the Scan Complete Status sections as "Complete".

Clicking next I get "Unable to establish a connection between the PC and the device"

The log file looks ok until near the bottom I see this:

Pinging Desktop gateway 10.xx.xxx.x started

Ping echoed successfully

Pinging Device 169.xxx.x.x started

Ping echoed successfully

Unable to establish a connection between the PC and the device. Get up-to-date solutions to common connection problems. Please click the following link:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=65257

The device appears to be disconnected. Please connect your device to the PC

ActiveSync is performing a sync, please wait......

Searching ActiveSync log file

Log start found

No errors found in ActiveSync log file

What I have:

Work PC: Dell D410, Win Firewall (ports are open), Active Sync 4.5

I am out of ideas at this point any hints of where to look next?

sounds like a firewall or 'disabled usb port' issue.

have/can you contact you IT support dept. ?

what version of windows ?

My IT department gave me the ol "we don't support MS Mobile, only Black Berry". So I am on my own. I like the MS platform (even though I hated it back when I was a NeXT cheerleader) because it works well at consolidating my Personal Info on my home PC and my Work Info from my work PC. Whether I like it or not my work life and personal life will be intertwined for as long as I am working.

I hear ya about the firewall and USB port issue. That is what I thought too.

OS: XP SP2

ActiveSync: 4.5

My Windows Firewall shows exceptions checked:

Activesync Application

Activesync Connection Manager

Activesync RAPI Manager

Activesync Service

Device: Windows Mobile 6 (Smartphone)

ActiveSync Connection Settings:

Allow USB settings (checked)

Just going out but IIRC Chris DeHerra has the answer at http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/ - just something I vaguely remember I could be wrong and don't have time to check myself now - appologies if it's a red herring!

Hi

Does your computer use Sygate Firewall, as this blocks ActiveSync via USB....but if you set up your ActiveSync via Bluetooth it might work if it is a firewall issue. ActiveSync uses Ports and TCP/IP which can be blocked by firewalls, but if you use Bluetooth then the connection is Serial and usually gets through fine. USB ActiveSync does not work on my laptop from work but Bluetooth ActiveSync does.

Give Bluetooth ActiveSync a go, if you dont have BT see if you can borrow a dongle just to see if thats your issiue.

Ok I will try the BlueTooth route. Of course something happned to my Bluetooth driver so i got to fix that first. I am starting to get so frustrated I might just reimage the whole thing.

On another note when I connect the phone to my PC with USB (and Activesync does not make a partnership) I see that the Device Manager shows under Network Adapters a "Windows Mobile-based Device #2". Does that mean everything is ok as far as the USB connection goes? So the issue is just a port blockage?

Have you actually checked out the solutions at pocketpcfaq? I would be very suprised if none of them worked!

in the PC to USB section, have you got the tick box ticked? if not tick it. This helps ActiveSync issuies

start ->settings ->connections-> 0 (more) -> 1 USB to PC, Tick = Enable Advanced Network Functionality.

Yep USB to PC, Enable Advanced Network Functionality, checked off...

I will play with it a little more, maybe take a real close look at my home PC settings. I might just come in to work on Monday and reimage. Ah the Windows life....

Yea I tried everythign I could find there but nothing seems to help. I think the issue is with this particaular laptop at work. Just looking for a block of down time where I can reimage it. Friday afternoon usually seems like a slow time.

first off, turn the aqdvanced network stuff in USB to PC OFF!! this sets the connection back to serial over USB and solves crap loads of firewall and AV problems.

If you do leave it turned on, check the following.

You said that the S710 shows in device manager as a Windows Mobile Device #5. That's good. it means that the drivers have installed and the computer can see the handset.

Next check in network connections. You should see a new LAN connection called Local Area Connection #2/3/4/whatever. This is the connection used by Activesync.

Look at the properties for this connection.

You should see three protocols ticked on the general tab:

Client for microsoft networks

file and printer sharing

Internet protocol (TCP/IP)

If they are not ticked, then tick them.

Once you have doen this, highlight the Internet Protocol and hit the properties button.

Make sure that all settings are set to Automatic or Server assigned and then click OK a few timesand close the control panel

re-connect the S710

if they were already set to that, then the drivers and the connection are fine, but something is blocking the connection to Activesync. Then we get into the firewall area of things.

You say that the windows firewall has the ports open. Open the firewall and make sure that the box marked 'Do not allow exceptions' is not ticked. this will block activesync, even if you program the ports on the exceptions page.

Personally from work, it seems that turning the advanced network functions off tends to cut down the number of problems immensely.

Hmm. Everything checks out except for I am a little lost on what you mean by this: "first off, turn the aqdvanced network stuff in USB to PC OFF!! this sets the connection back to serial over USB and solves crap loads of firewall and AV problems"

Do you mean the advanced tab under the Local Area Connection my phone makes when conencted?

I had this problem out with the ActiveSync Software Engineer at Microsoft by email in Feb 2007. It turns out you need to add a registry key which sets the LSP (Layered Service Provider) mode to "Any", which is partly the problem.

If you want to give it a go, do the following:

1. Go to Start > Run

2. Type in "REGEDIT" and press ENTER

3. Navigate to the following location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows CE Services

4. Add a new DWORD key and call it "AllowLSP" with a value of "3".

5. Restart your PC.

6. Try synchronising again...

This worked for me when I had problems with WMDC when it first came out, but it should work for previous and future versions too.
