Hey all, I figured someone here might be able to help me wade through the total minefield that is "Mobile Contracts" without me having to talk to a salesman who is going to try and push HIS product on me.

What I am looking for is the lowest cost GPRS contract for my WM6 phone.

As far as I know the T-Mobile Web'n'Walk and the Orange "Whatever they call it" are teh two only options. I was wondering if there is any equivalent contract for PAYG phones or anything like that. The reason that I ask is that I send so few Text messages and make so few phonecalls that half of the contract on these two price plans is effectively wasted?

Any ideas where I should be looking?

In brief I am after the lowest contract cost for a GPRS contract without it being a Data Only contract.

Quick answer no. There are PAYG data deals but they are a lot more expensive than the equivalent data on contract.

I would ask T and O what the cheapest talk tarrifs you can have to go with their unlimited's.

T-Mobile - Said their cheapest is Flex 20 with 7.50 WnW pack (Total - £27.50 p/m)

Orange - Refused to talk about their upcomming package saying details would be release at the end of the month for an offer in June

02 - Had some package that needed a £20 contract with £15 GPRS package for 10MB p/m

looks like T-Moblie is still the best atm however they wouldnt just do a sim pack they say you have to take a handset.

T-Mobile PAYG has a £1 limit for GPRS data per day so even if you use it heavily it'll only cost around £30 per month. Of course, if you don't use it so much it'll cost less. I got mine as SIM only as well.

Check out www.theunwired.net/?itemid=3810#article

Here you will get all the info on Orange's upcoming data package.

I did read a post somewhere that said the data has daily restrictions on consumption. About 20mb per day or so.

The best GRPS contract in the UK is with Virgin Mobile, and there smartphone is the Lobster 700TV. Once you have set yourself up and opened a on-line account. You could set-up a direct debit. What you use, they take. I understand their charge is 0.05p per Kb.

Hope it helps,

And the Lobster 700TV is only £49.99 in Virgin Megastores.

I got one, and the same deal. This is Pay-As-You-Go though.

The problem/advantage I have is that I dont need a handset, I just bought an HTC Vox and previously accessed everything through the SIM card provided through my job however, job change time has arrived again and my new job doesnt provide a phone, hence the need for a contract.

If your phone is unlocked and will take a T-Mobile, how about their SIM-only rate.

You pay 7.50 a month for 50 mins of calls (enough for me.... ), then add on the Web n Walk bundle, again 7.50, so for £15 you get a decent GPRS package.

One downside is that this doesn't include any texts, you pay extra for them.

This sounds like the deal for me. you got a link to it or the "T-Mobile" name for it?

Its okay, I called T-Mobile and they knew what I was talking about. They confirmed that although you can but the SIM off the website you cant buy WnW with it however if you call them once you have activated your new SIM they will enable it and bill you as normal.

Thanks for all the help guys, seems this is totaly resolved for me. T-Mobile win.

I got myself a couple of Lobsters to give as presents - great value. But Virgin's gprs is going to cost you £5 per mb! I will unlock mine via www.imei-check.co.uk for £20 each (perfectly legal) and suggest to the recipients they use an Orange PAYG sim with data costing £1 per day or £5 per 7 days for unlimited consumption. (subject to fair use)

Not sure why you would do this...

Orange

  • £1 per day = £30 per month (ish)
£5 per week = £20 per month (ish)

    T-Mobile
    • £7.50 per month SIM only contract + £7.50 WnW = £15 per month
      ...but each to their own.

The users of the Lobsters will be kids.

They will be on PAYG sims so their use will be on a ad hoc basis.

As an aside, apparently if you top up with £30 on Virgin they will unlock the phone for free. So that saves the £20 unlock fee. So for the extra £10 the kids get £30 of voice/data. They can then change networks.
