Guest quangdx Posted May 20, 2007 Report Posted May 20, 2007 my t-mobile Vario II crashed the other day as I was replying to a text message, nothing unusual there, wm5 has been known to crash once in a while. so I soft reset it, and it reboots. But now, after it's all finished loading, it would run for a few seconds, only to crash again. I reset again, but the freezing up follows shortly. Nothing I do stops this happening. So in desperation I go for the Hard Reset. Everything gets wiped and it reinstalls all the T-Mobile stuff. But now I have no signal, I take the SIM card out and put it in an old nokia, and that works fine, i receive two text messages which I think were due around the time of the first crash. The texts are normal texts from friends, saying hello and stuff. So it's not the SIM card, it must be something to do with the phone. I've just tried the SIM card in the phone again, and i notice on the T-Mobile boot screen it says the usual stuff. M 05 S 04 B 06 D1.21, but just before it blinks it says No GSM. I searched the forums and, this seems to be a problem people can get when tryting to unlock or upgrade their phones rom. Problem is, I've not tried to do either. Any help would be greatfully appreciated. Am I going to have to mess around with ROM upgrades, all of which scares me greatly. Or should I just send the phone back to T-Mobile for repair. thanks, quang.
Guest quangdx Posted May 20, 2007 Report Posted May 20, 2007 I've just checked to see if i can read the contacts of the SIM card. Tapping on SIM Manager doesn't work, nothing happens. Which leads me to believe that maybe the SIM reader on the phone is damaged in some way.
Guest quangdx Posted July 2, 2007 Report Posted July 2, 2007 in the end, i sent it back to t-mobile, and the sent myt a brand new vario II under warranty.
Guest evolution400 Posted July 4, 2007 Report Posted July 4, 2007 in the end, i sent it back to t-mobile, and the sent myt a brand new vario II under warranty. I think they sent me your phone mate because thast the same issue I had on MDA Vario II phone number 3 theprevious 2 were just random crashes then loss of signal occaisonally but then this lates phone is exacylt as described by yourself I had a problem hard reset the phone then No GSM appears on the boot and no signal can be obtained I agree with your assumption it must be the sim card reader thats fault so I am expecting MDA Vario II number 4 tomorrow fingers crossed aye :) I think they are sending me reconditioned phones is there any way to tell if thats the case ? P resume they just test them by switching them on then if they come on they put on a new case and ship em out lol :P

P resume they just test them by switching them on then if they come on they put on a new case and ship em out lol :P as far as i'm aware, yeah, they just send out reconditioned phones. the one i've just received, seemed to work okay. but then i found that it would sometimes crash, 7/10 times, when i try to make a call or send a text. worse, it would crash, when i wasn't watching it, i'm assuming when someone tried to text or call me, so i went nearly the whole day, thinking my phone was fine and no-one was calling me. when in fact it had crashed, no idea when. let's hope number 3 will be okay. can't believe you're on number 4 already, and the fact they sent a non working phone out to you. i've been seriously contemplating going back to a simple phone, just for phone calls, and carrying a separate Pocket PC for the other stuff. does mean having to carry 2 devices though. also the fact the Vario2 is totally crap for games, very poor graphics performance.
Guest evolution400 Posted July 4, 2007 Report Posted July 4, 2007 I bought a SDA II phone from ebay for £50 it does GPRS, it has WM3 on there so internet, email etc and uses activesync so I am using that at the moment until tomobile send me a working phone if not I think I am going to change to the MDA Compact III same phone as the O2 orbit my mate has the orbit ans says its reliable and has onboard GPS. I got to be honest though when the MDA Vario II was working I had it upgraded to WM6 the OS is a lot quicker and more modern looking etc much better than WM5. But I am spending too much time *issing about with the phone and wondering if I am able to reciev calls etc so I think this is the last try for me then I am giving up and going for another phone I may even get the new HTC 710S or the UBiQUiO 401 bit smaller but still have lots of features.
Guest quangdx Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 so i received vario II number 3, and it's been running okay so far (i've had it 3 days). i've flashed it with windows mobile 6 and it seems to make things run much nicer. although i seem to have a little problem with PIE, not sure if that's WM6 or the new radio rom. still thinking about maybe buying the sony ericsson k850i, when it comes out, mainly for the HSDPA and camera. then buy a seperate PocketPC maybe the dell axim x51v. it does mean having to carry around two devices though. the other alternative is to get the HTC kaiser, after reading the review on modaco, i'm serverly tempted.

Glad its working for you ! I had phone number 4 lasted 5 days flawlessly no crashes droped calls etc then when I shared it to use GPRS with my laptop while staying at a hotel the screen stopped functioning and now the screen wont work at all so now I have to send it back to t-mobile for repair I have had enough of the Vario II exellent phone when working but too many probems I the XDA wikie fore the hermes, thats reported all known Vario II issues and I have experienced them all now It hink lol the serial numbers match up with the problems also so its clear when they have been swapping my phone they have been giving me reconditioned older ones. Yeah saw that review looks very impressive when is it out ? is it going on T-mobile ? maybe one to upgrade next year as I have bought a V1240 aka HTC torndao from ebay as new condidtion flashed with latest QTEK f/w running like a dream so keeping this phone until the Kaiser comes out and putting the Vario II on ebay when I get one back that works I have no more faith in this phone.
