Guest mrD Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 Hi Guys, Its been a while since my last post - so i hope you're all well. I would really appreciate any advice or help regarding the following. I have installed a FTP CLient (Orneta FTP) onto my Vario 2. FTP was working well a couple of weeks ago. I could upload and download files from my server. As far as I am aware I have not made any changes. I wanted to upload to my site again and when I clicked the connect button in the FTP Software I got a message saying: "System Exception: System.Net.Sockets.SocketException:Could not find resource assembly" I uninstalled the software and installed it again and got the same message - I also tried another FTP Client and got the same message. Could somebody please translate this and tell me what it means - if you have a fix then that will be brilliant to... Are my FTP'ing days over? Cheers, mr D.
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 Sounds like somehow the .net Compact Framework has got corrupted on your device... Download and install this, then try again: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en P
Guest mrD Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 Hi Paul, Thanks for the advice. I uninstalled the NET Framework that I had on my device and the FTP Client. I downloaded the s/w from the link above and installed that - restared my device and then installed the FTP Client again. Unfortunately I am still getting the same message. Any other ideas? Cheers, mrD
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 Is there any more to that error message? P
Guest mrD Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 Hi Paul, Thats the only error message - ive tried it on two different servers and its the same message... Cheers, mrD.
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 It's definitely related to your .net CF install. When you reinstalled .net Compact Framework, did the install complete OK on the device? P
Guest mrD Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 Hi Paul, Yep it went through with no problems. I installed it onto the device and then a message comes up that says you need to restart the device or it can do it automaitaclly for you. mrD.
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 I'm stumped then... how about trying Resco Explorer's excellent FTP client? http://www.resco.net/pocketpc/explorer/default.asp It's not free unfortunately, but it is a great app. If you were a MoDaCo Plus member you'd get it freepitch> P
Guest mrD Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 hehe - thanks for your help Paul. Ill keeping checking the posts to see if anyone comes up with a fix and if I find the answer then I shall post here. Hmm back to my exception then... Cheers, mrD.
Guest mrD Posted May 30, 2007 Report Posted May 30, 2007 Hi Guys, Its me again - still having issues with the FTP. I installed a different FTP CLient onto my Vario 2 and the error message that I got this time was 'Error Code 10054'. I googled it and found out that it had something to do with Winsocks, but then it got too geeky for me after that. I hope that makes sense to someone else who may have an idea of what is wrong. It seems that some kind of service is not starting on my Pocket PC which was working fine before. Any help is much appreciated... Cheers, mrD
Guest Phil John Posted May 30, 2007 Report Posted May 30, 2007 Hi Guys, Its me again - still having issues with the FTP. At this point I'd make a backup of all my PIM data, files etc (but not system files or registry as it could re-create the problem) and do a hard reset. If it still doesn't work then it's a warrantry repair, unless you can convince T-Mob to do a straight swap.
Guest mrD Posted May 30, 2007 Report Posted May 30, 2007 Hi Phil John, When you say WM Install what does that mean? Other programms install ok on the device - i just cant FTP to work... Thanks, mrD
Guest stemill Posted May 30, 2007 Report Posted May 30, 2007 Just been browsing on xda developers and it looks as if T-mob may have blocked ftp access, see post #16 on this thread. I very much doubt your phone has the OS completely borked.
Guest mrD Posted May 30, 2007 Report Posted May 30, 2007 Hmmm - thanks for that Stemill. Ill call Tmob and find out whats going on. Ill report back later! mrD.
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted May 30, 2007 Report Posted May 30, 2007 Eek. Mine has stopped working now! Investigating, watch this space... P
Guest Phil John Posted May 30, 2007 Report Posted May 30, 2007 Hmmm - thanks for that Stemill. Ill call Tmob and find out whats going on. Ill report back later! mrD. Just a thought, have you tried using the ftp program over a wireless connection? If that works then it is probably the port blocking.
Guest UndeadDevil Posted May 30, 2007 Report Posted May 30, 2007 FTP has been blocked, I phoned T-Mobile up about it today and explained how stupid this was. An example I gave was: "You installed SPB GPRS Monitor from the Software Disc, then goto there site and try to download the .cab's for some of there other great apps, only to get connection refused messages because they download from SPB's FTP server." Yeah I know SPB also have HTTP Download links but thats not the point! Blocking FTP is just stupid! Its not on, its not even the FUP and T&C. I can imagine what they will write: "You may not download from any FTP servers or Upload Pictures or any other file content to your personal website" They have also now blocked Port 22 (SSH). The guy I spoke to kindly enabled VPN access on my account. Since he's done this Port 22 has started working again but still no FTP. Now to get VPN working so I can browse whatever I wan't
Guest mrD Posted May 31, 2007 Report Posted May 31, 2007 Yep - I can also confirm what undeaddevil is saying. Can you believe this. The jokers at Tmob have blocked FTP and IM etc etc. They have said it is due to new secuirty measures which came in 2 weeks ago and they can do this without having to inform customers as it is in their T&Cs. On the normal WnW plan you can borwse, email, stream etc upto 1GB of data a month - does that sound unlimited to you guys? However if you upgrade to their WnW Plus account for an extra fiver then you can get all the facilities that are currenly blocked. What a con - sounds like a money making idea to me. Hmm so it doesnt look like my device is borked - it seems Tmob need a reboot!!!!! Cheers, mrD.

Bit miffed by this, think I'll argue the point with them that FTP usage IS part of 'the whole internet.'
Guest UndeadDevil Posted June 2, 2007 Report Posted June 2, 2007 I e-mailed customer relations and complained about this and the other ports they blocked (SSH, Port 22, probably accidental as FTP is Port 21) and they offered me a upgrade to Web'N'Walk Plus for £10 a month. Maybe you should e-mail them? Blocking FTP was stupid, Blocking SSH was even more stupid. The main reason for getting a Windows Mobile was so I could SSH into my servers where ever I was.
