T-Mobile Web'n'Walk Plus / Max USB coolness

This isn't strictly Windows Mobile related, but it's so cool, I thought i'd post!

I have 2 mobile contracts - 1 for my main device (T-Mobile Flext 35 Web'n'Walk), and a second for either a second device i'm testing, or for my laptop data card (T-Mobile Web'n'Walk Plus).

Up until now i'd been using a shocking pink PCMCIA card in my laptop, which is cool (in a slightly 'i'm in touch with my feminine side kinda way) but it didn't support HSDPA. It was also a bit restrictive, as I wasn't always on devices with PCMCIA ports. Enter the T-Mobile HSDPA USB Modem. Mine arrived this morning!

I got mine from the MoDaCo Shop, where it is FREE on either an 18 month Web'n'Walk Plus or Web'n'Walk Max contract, with 6/9 months half price line rental accordingly, or a selection of cool FREE gifts (HPLR is the way to go I think). Head on over to the product page at the shop if you're interested, and don't forget all purchases earn you a free years subscription to MoDaCo Ad Free, or a £10 discount on any other MoDaCo product.

Anyway, the device arrived, and I took it out of it's box (didn't read the manual of course!) and chucked the accompanying CD in the drive. To my surprised, there were only 2 PDF manuals on there. No drivers. Odd! I checked the box and sure enough, no more CDs. I gave in, and read the quick start guide.

Coolness.

Basically, when you plug the device into your machine, it installs both the modem and a mass storage device, the mass storage device containing the drivers. Awesome! So all you need is the modem itself and a USB cable (same miniUSB your phone uses), and you have everything you need to get set up and go.

The setup routine started itself up, install was a breeze, and it works a treat. I'm very impressed - now if only all products were so cleverly thought out. I mean, imagine if the first time you plugged your Windows Mobile device into a PC it appeared as a drive with ActiveSync available for install? Would that rock or what!

P.S. SD card included in pic above for size comparison. The modem is pretty tiny!

it is indeed a sweet little bit of kit.

It's actually a huawei E220, tha same as 3 Ireland sell.

Just know that you take a chance on it working if you happen to have a Compaq laptop.

So far we've been overun by calls on this thing at work...seems on the compaqs, it appears as a mass storage device and then a few seconds later it disappears again.

been playing with the 3 Ireland one at work and it seems to be nice and quick!

I've been using these lads at work and I can confirm they rock. I did some speed tests in central London and was getting 1.3mb transfer. 180 millisecond ping responce

Hmm, I have the WnW package with my phone... can I buy this stand alone without any contract?

Interesting.

Critical question which should be really easy to establish.... is the SIM card accessible on the modem? i.e. Could the SIM be removed and then put into a Hermes - giving the Hermes a data only connection?

I have an Orange M3100 and am really struggling with the short battery life, so would like to use my Orange SIM in another handset and occasionally stick the T-Mobile SIM into the M3100 to allow for email & web usage etc.

Doable?

yeah, the SIM is reachable through a little slot on the side. Should be fine to pop it into there.

Out of interest Paul, what make of laptop did you plug it into?

I used it with an OQO 2

And as rhedgehog says, the SIM slot is very easily accessible.

Thanks for that, Paul. Would you say that there will be no problem taking the T-Mobile SIM out of the modem and inserting it into an M3100 and getting the data connections to work with 3G/HSPDA?

I appreciate that the phone will probably need to be unlocked and have the data connections settings changed to suit T-Mobile, but if doing that will allow it to work, I may have found my solution to handset juggling
