Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 26, 2003 Report Posted January 26, 2003 Er, aren't these the same? Shouldn't there be a 'yes' option? P
Guest Bazz Posted January 26, 2003 Report Posted January 26, 2003 That's making a couple of assumptions: 1) That an update will be available 2) That it'll fix the certification hack. Personally I'm gonna let someone else try it first. You need to add a 3rd option for this! Barry
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 26, 2003 Report Posted January 26, 2003 And (2) is a BIG assumption! ;) P
Guest DJHope Posted January 26, 2003 Report Posted January 26, 2003 Im gonna wait and see what happens im suprised that now we have the phone open someone hasnt found another way already, but then maybe they have and they want to keep it secret until the update comes ;) Im definately not giving up being able to run unsigned software though so im not updating till theirs a new hack/orange get their act together! Still its very early to be deciding these things, we will have to wait and see what happens with the update. Maybe orange will come to their senses and just f*ck it !!! DJ Hope
Guest Firaas Posted January 26, 2003 Report Posted January 26, 2003 Ahh - I'm a Yes. If it fixes certification then I'm backing up to SD first.
Guest AsherUK Posted January 26, 2003 Report Posted January 26, 2003 I would like to update so all the annoying little bugs are fixed (IF the update fixes them !), but I also want to run whatever I want on MY phone. The whole point of getting this phone was so I could adapt it to my needs and "play" with the operating system. If I had to make the decision between one or the other, I would opt for not updating, as going back to running what Orange want me to on MY phone would (in my opinion) render the "smart" part of the phone useless.
Guest budda Posted January 26, 2003 Report Posted January 26, 2003 I would like to update so all the annoying little bugs are fixed (IF the update fixes them !), but I also want to run whatever I want on MY phone. But at the same time YOUR phone is running on THEIR network, and they have perfectly good reasons to protect their business from the evils of potential worms etc. The best solution would be the two stage certification. Unsigned apps work on the phone but are unable to make use of any of the radio based h/w in the phone. So we can still play games and fiddle with emulators withou having to unlock phones and hack about.
Guest Firaas Posted January 26, 2003 Report Posted January 26, 2003 But at the same time YOUR phone is running on THEIR network, and they have perfectly good reasons to protect their business from the evils of potential worms etc. Name one phone out of the dozens of smartphones/PDAs that are out there that have had the same level of protection.
Guest amo Posted January 26, 2003 Report Posted January 26, 2003 Plus, out of all the freeware made, name one that has a malicious intention...for spv anyway. Are there any that were attempted for xda or other xda type phone pda hybrids?
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 26, 2003 Report Posted January 26, 2003 I'm not updating until i find out what it results in. If it does close up the de-cert hole and prevent further mod's i certainly won't. Just got to wait for the first guinea pig to post a "I updated and i can't de-cert my phone any more!!!!!!!" thread ;)
Guest MECX Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 yeh depends how many bugs the update fixes---if the only thing the update does is decert the phone then i wont---and will go and throw my phone through the nearest orange dealer window--but lets think positive. Will orange not be able to update our phones without asking us???
Guest Firaas Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 For those who don't want to update their SPVs if the certification workaround is fixed, I've got access to a phone on which the SPV cert-workaround hasn't been applied, and I'm happy to try the update on there - it won't be requiring the workaround, either - at least not immediately.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 Found our guinea pig then, now just to wait for the update....
Guest spacemonkey Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 The update is likely to stop the exploit we use to unlock our phones... the question is whether they re-lock, our unlocked phones... Yes they could push a few specific settings on, but then if I've added certs to the certificate stores, I can't see a generic update ressetting my certificate stores... So, if I update, my phone might still be unlocked (or have certs that let me unlock it again) but if I hard reset after an update I'd be screwed. There's definitely some serious testing that needs to be done once this update arrives.
Guest cseilern Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 hmmm.... almost 70% of the polled said that they would NOT be updating at all or only if they could figure a way to re-crack app signing (-if necessary). I hope this sends a clear message to Orange: "let us have unsigned local apps, and we will accept signed network apps!"
Guest Firaas Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 The update pack says that all data will be erased from the phone, presumably meaning that it will perform a complete hard reset. The ROM file itself is 32mb.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 I would assume the phone will have to be reset once the ROM is flashed, due to the nature of ROM flashing. As spacemonkey said though, it will need a lot of testing.
Guest Steve_Medin Posted February 5, 2003 Report Posted February 5, 2003 If codesigning was going away forever, would I be spending my days here contributing at Baltimore's expense?
Guest casper508 Posted February 5, 2003 Report Posted February 5, 2003 If codesigning was going away forever, would I be spending my days here contributing at Baltimore's expense? We don't want code signing to go away. We just want an option to run unsigned apps(atleast I do). Cas
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted February 5, 2003 Report Posted February 5, 2003 An option to run unprivilidged app's maybe...
Guest cyrilthefish Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 i'd do it this way! back up phone to SD/MMC card update if certification is there, restore phone from the backup i've allready done the above once before after running orange update! it re-applies the security settings ;) unsigned apps are far more important than bug fixes to me
Guest DJHope Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 Yeh thats what id do too, id prefer to run my own apps that have updated software ! DJ Hope
Guest Precognisant Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 Forgive me if I'm thick but.. The phones could run on IP addesses (I Fink I red it somware) and this could feasibly be tied into the radio portion of the phone. This being the case could not Orange give us a subset of thier network (effectively sandboxing all development, malicious or otherwise, here), release the source code (OS) and let us (MBoden et al really) develop it as a seperate thingy? We could then develop (for them I bet) phones that us tekies could really play with. I dont know nowt about the carrier set up so if I'm being silly please ignore.
