At my house if I'm downstairs I only get GPRS, but upstairs I get 3G or sometimes HSPDA (or at least thats the symbol I get now i've upgraded my radio rom).

How can I find out what data transfer speeds I'm getting short of using it as a modem for my laptop?

Navigate to http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/ on your phone and run the speed test.

This is what i get:

HSDPA - 1.3mbps

UMTS - 300kbps

GPRS - 3kbps

Speedtests can be in-acurate. On my PC I get speedtest results of around 1.9mbps, yet downloads easily hit 300kb/s (2.6mbps) (This is using http://www.speedtest.net, I guess its because of them being overloaded.)

A more acurate way would be to install SPB GPRS Monitor and start a large file download. You can then monitor the speed as it downloads, even walk around to find your sweat spot for the best download speed.

If your on T-Mobile you can find SPB GPRS Monitor on the Software Disc, otherwise you can get a 30 day Trial on SPB's website (http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/)
