Guest Kippax Posted June 2, 2007 Report Posted June 2, 2007 Had one now for several months and ....... sorry I should say I've had 3 now in several months and the latest one is locking again. None of the buttons on the front of the phone work when the keyboard is slid open. Makes it very difficult to use. T-Mobile have said that they will give me a maximum of three phones of the same model so if I take it back now I will need to choose an alternative. Nokia N95 maybe..... ? Or should I just put up with it..... I use MSN an awful lot and think it would be very difficult with anything other than a full QWERTY keyboard ?

TBH it sounds like a software issue, which can be fixed by flashing another ROM. Google for it a bit and you should find several alternative ROMs for your device, mostly hosted and supported over at www.xda-developers.com. This will invalidate your warranty, but seeing as you can't send it back again for a new phone, there isn't really much point in keeping your warranty intact is there? Phil

Phil My Vario II has allways ran fine, what software have you installed on it? If you wish to update the ROM's and upgrade to Windows Mobile 6, search for mrvanx's guides and wmblack in google.
Guest pd.ryder Posted June 2, 2007 Report Posted June 2, 2007 Kippax - were the previous 2 similar / same faults? What causes did they give you for the previous failures? Surely they're not suggesting it's your fault - ie you are causing the problems on the device? Like UndeadDevil says, what are you installing on it? If the VII is at fault surely T should just replace it (again & again) until they find you a decent one? don't get me wrong, I've had my own 'issues' wit the VII but I found T to be very supportive throughout and now I have one which does the job very nicely. Failing that, flash it to Black. I've seen the N95 and smart as it is - it's no PPC by any stretch of the imagination.
Guest Kippax Posted June 3, 2007 Report Posted June 3, 2007 1st phone completely carked. Just locked with RGB horizontal bars on the screen. Could turn it on or off without removing or inserting the battery. Second one just used to lock with no explanation. Though this time removing and re-inserting the battery would solve the problem but only temporarily. This time the phone works OK, though quite often when I open the keyboard the navigational buttons on the front of the phone fail to work. Returned to the store and as I thought, they stated that they have a policy where after three phones they offer the customer an alternative (new) handset. Keen to try again so convinced them to give it another go. However they wont do a swap in the shop and insist on returning the phone to the lab before they will issue a replacement. Its a fair call I suppose as the sales guys in the shop aren't really in a position to accurately judge if somebody tries to pull a fast one. The only problem is that their loan phones are a joke and I have to wait. Luckily I have an un-locked P910 so I'll be using that for now. As for software on the phone... I have nothing on it that wasn't supplied with it originally. Like I said I've had problems from early on so never really felt comfortable experimenting. Each time they have had the phone, they have never offered an explanation, just given me a new handset. I'll give it one more go and if it locks again then I'll come back here for some advice and try WM6 and update the ROMs.
Guest jimbouk Posted June 3, 2007 Report Posted June 3, 2007 Flash a new rom! It is as simple as hard resetting these days. You will be gob-smacked at the improvements in performance!
Guest pd.ryder Posted June 3, 2007 Report Posted June 3, 2007 I'm onto my third replacement now - and fortunately this has been ok. There is a giant thread on here relating to it freezing, which was how my previous two suffered. This usually happened when travelling through poor signal areas so the phone had to swap between 3G, GPRS and/or no signal and back again. The last one has taken to 'the lab' for investigation and they ended up replacing it again. I too had to suffer the dire 'loan-phone' but thankfully not for long. The only application I found made the freezing paricularly bad was Smart:M Panel data use monitoring software, and I also have avoided installing the GPRS Monitor which came on the CD ROM with the Vario II. Since then, I've had no freezing problems at all. Persevere with it is my advice, because as soon as you swap for another device I think you'll regret it within a week. Best of luck
