Using Wireless on the S710

Not sure if anyone else has had a similar problem - I have been trying to determine if the wireless in my SPV E650 is broken.

I have tried connecting to two different wireless access point - one is a Netgear WPN802 108Mbps MIMO router and the other is an older 3Com Office Connect 2000 (11Mbps).

When I scan for networks with my E650 I can see them just fine but whenever I actually try to connect to them I just get errors. I either get the message that the network key is wrong or that my network setup is wrong.

On the router side of things I have changed the security from WEP to WPA to WPA2 and I have also tried no security on both. I have also tried changing all of the settings on the SPV. I have been pulling my hair out on this one and was wondering if anyone else had any thoughts on it?

Have you tried setting you router to have no security set just as a temporary measure. This will at least narrow down where you need to be looking.

Another point (and I apologise if you feel I'm patronising you - not intended) have you checked that the key you're entering is correct. It can get a little fiddly on the keyboard. It took me 2 attempts to get the WEP key right.

Millsto,

Guess who?

It's not likely to be the hardware in your phone because if it was the far most likely symptom is either that it would have generateed an error message, or it would not have even seen the wireless access point.

For more likely is a configuration error. Configuring the device itself is simple, becuase there isn't a lot to configure! If you have tried it on a wireless access point broadcasting its SSID and with protection (both WEP and WPA/PSK) switched off and it still won't work then I'd say the configuration of the wireless access point may be causing problems.

As you know, it refused to fully connect when we tried it on the wardroom network which doesn't have a DHCP server running on it. It appeared to connect to the wireless access point itself, but was booted off when it didn't get an IP address.

This seems logical to me. Because there is nowhere (I can see) within the WM6 setup screens to set up your IP address it seems reasonable to me that it REQUIRES receiving its connection information via DHCP. This seems to fit with the function of a telephone - it would be pointless and pretty dumb to have a phone that has a static IP address.

Likewise, because at home you have a wierd setup and your DHCP server is BEHIND your wireless access point, the phone can't get an IP address via DHCP, giving you the error. At my house my router also dishes out the DHCP stuff, so it works perfectly.

That's my two cents. But hey, I still can't get the blasted thing application unlocked. Guess that's what I get for trying to sync with a Mac.

Ciao

something else to consider is whether or not the router has MAC address filtering switched on....

Indeed

There is no MAC address filtering on the router. I believe it might be a flaw in WM6 where the phone cannot connect to a WAP if not given a DHCP address directly - crap!

I agree, BUT I don't think its a flaw, I think its by design. Mobile phones tend to be mobile, so it could potentially cause issues if the phone has a static IP address. I suppose best case it just wouldn't connect to the network, worst case if it has a duplicate IP address it will cause all sorts of wierd issues.

As you of all people should know ;-)

Thinking back to my Orange training, back in the days when WAP was new and exciting, I seem to recall something about GPRS not allowing static IP's. I realise that GPRS is tooootally different from WiFi, but given the intended application of WiFi on phones it makes sense, does it not?

on the subject of wireless,

my e650 connects to my router but the little GPRS call G is still displayed next to the signal bar whilst browsing via the wireless ? is this correct.

also, at random times i've noticed the little G is visible, even though the phone is locked. wonder what is causing the connection to start, and is it incurring me a data cost ?

weird.

edit : just read http://www.modaco.com/HTC-Vox-VoxMoDaCocom-f302.html

gprs now shutdownable with red phone button.
