Using phone as modem for laptop

Hi guys. I'm thinking of adding Web n Walk Plus to my U-Fix plan with T-mobile so I can use my phone as a modem with my laptop. (I dont want to sign up to a full on broadband connection at home as I'm moving flat soon and cant be bothered to arrange transfering my broadband provision so I thought I'dd add on web n walk as i can always take the service off after a month if i dont make much use of it.)

It's a HTC Monet (the un-lovely Lobster) so not 3G or anything fancy, it will be over GPRS. Question is what are speeds like when using these sort of phones as modems. I only want to do light browsing (email etc.) so nothing too data heavy but will it be slower than a tortoise on valium or bearable?
