Guest fraser Posted March 28, 2003 Report Posted March 28, 2003 In anticipation of GPRS charging (and the lack of wireless lan support), I'm considering having a very long cable between my PC and my sofa. The PC is on the other side of the room, and I'd probably need a 10 - 20 meter long serial extension cable, which I would then plug a SPV serial sync cable into. Has anyone else done this, or got any thoughts? I was originally contemplating using a serial IRDA adapter that I have lying around (in conjunction with a shorter extension cable), however ajb3000 mentioned in this post that the workable range was 1 meter, which isn't very good for my needs. I really object to paying GPRS charges when I'm at home!!
Guest madu Posted March 29, 2003 Report Posted March 29, 2003 USB as a type of interface would NOT support connection over long distance. I have an extension from Belkin (goldplated) and the lable says: "Caution - do not exceed 10 feet of total cable distance on low-speed devices, 16 feet on high speed devices". But I am sure there are 'boosters' that would allow increased length (like re-translators).
Guest fraser Posted March 29, 2003 Report Posted March 29, 2003 Yeah, I've seen the USB extenders and ruled them out already. However, serial (COM) wires can go really long distances normally, up to 50 feet. I was wondering if anyone's tried it with the SPV phone cradle.
