Reverting to original T-Mobile ROM

Hi,

I have installed the Black 3.01 ROM (WM6) for about a month now and have not had any problems with it at all. But now my phone is damaged and may have to be sent back for a repair. The power button is faulty and I need to get it fixed or get a replacement through my insurance. The only problem is that I dont want the insurance company to know that I have installing ROMs other than T-Mobile ones on my handset. I'm not sure whether this will invalidate my insurance or not.

Can anyone tell me how I can revert back to the original T-Mobile ROM (WM5) that was shipped with my MDA Vario II?

Many Thanks

You can't - it hasn't been made available for download.

Having said that, i've never had any issues returning devices under warranty with different ROMs to what they shipped with!

There is a hungarian WM5 TMobile rom in english that would look pretty much like a UK T rom...

Someone may have dumped their original WM5 rom (using pauls guide) as a safeguard before upgrading to WM6, try asking on the various forums (not linked here for obvious reasons) that deal with that kind of thing.

Ok thanks guys for the fast response. My insurance is not with the T-Mob recommended company (CPP Phonesafe) but with another party called Talkcover. It is supposed to be fully comprehensive and I only purchased it recently so I will wait for the documentation to come through and read the fine print before I try to do any downgrading.

I cant see why the ROM version should matter too much really as I dropped the phone, so its physically damaged. I might try and dump the WM5 ROM in the future if I get a replacement handset. In the meantime I'll do some searching for some ROMs.

Thanks again!

Could anyone link me to paul's guide for backing up your current ROM? I'd love to give Black a go but I'm paranoid about mashing up the phone like, the day after I put a non-TM rom on it... If there's a first-timers guide for Hermes reflashing then I'd love to get it (last and only time I've reflashed a smartphone it was my old Alpine, and I know things have moved on a lot since then!)

There's a guide on the Wiki HERE or check this thread HERE

Ace, cheers all for the fast replies. I've wanted to back up my ROM for a fair while now!

I can confirm that it works a treat. I had to downgrade from Black Shadow as when I restored my PIM data using SPB Backup it borked the contacts list.

Downgraded to WM5

restored from Backup

Active Synced contacts over to outlook

Upgraded again to Black Shadow

Acitve Synced contacts from outlook

and it all went without a hiccup.

Sweet I'll give that a try over the weekend. Luckily for me my brother is the jealous type and bought the same phone as me so I can back up his ROM and load it onto mine.

Hehe, except after following the method on those links, you'll have more storage space than him as IMGFStools compresses all the empty blocks

I am always amazed when I read posts that suggest people hadn't sync'd with outlook anyway before resetting or flashing new roms...

Who needs Outlook on a PC when you can get free Exchange?

Wasn't really a problem, I knew I had a working backup. Plus there's not an awful lot of info in there anyway (and any that is I can always get manually from our corp Scalix setup (Scalix is what used to be HP OpenMail).

Soon it'll be even better, Funambol (the new name for Sync4j) is releasing a Scalix connector so I can sync OTA with a free exchange replacement.

In future though I'll probably make sure I'm synced before upgrading, just for peace of mind
