Well this is really weird. This is the story of the my IPSM size:

Originally: 7.5mb, but the maximum that ever appeared was 6.5

7 days ago: through normal use, the size had shrunk to 4.5 mb, even though i had not loaded any significant files onto it.

IPSM decay = 1 meg/month (having fallen 2 megs in 2 months)

3 days ago: i loaded an mp3 of about 3.5 mb onto the IPSM, and size fell to 300k. 4.5-3.5 is not 0.3

IPSM decay (for last week) = 2.4 meg/month (approx)

2 days ago: deleteed the mp3 file, to find my IPSM size now @ 2.15 megs.

IPSM decay (over last day) = 40.5 meg/month

Today: found a 1.53 meg temporary file left over from the mp3. deleted this, and IPSM space now @ 1.69 megs

IPSM decay (over last 2 days) = 6.9 meg/month

I estimate that, at current rate of decay, my IPSM will be so small in 3 days that the phone will be unusable. Maybe then it'll threanten to go into - numbers unless i feed the sd slot with fivers

SERIOUS NOW

I suspect the smaller spce is due to temporary files left from incomplete installations, but i dont have a clue where they are. However i find it very worrying that deleteing a file makes the space go down! DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHERE THESE ARE????

Help appreciated.

Or maybe my maths is wrong and 2.15 + 1.53 really is 1.69 ;) if thats the case, i apologise for doubting my SPVs beast of an IPSM :(

Ensure you power off/on the phone, this should help clearing up 'deleted' files.

I am now getting the same issue (message telling me i am running out of storage space) on a phone with no apps installed on the phone (256mb card can cope with them)..

I deleted all my custom ringtones from the phone, rebooted and replaced them. now i've got 3meg free again.

Yeah i tried that turning on and off couple of times. In fact the 1.69 turned into 1.62, which doesn't sound right at all. Have you found that when you fail to install something and just take the battery off the file just takes up space, but you cant actually see it or delete it? You then have to try re-installing and then cancelling properly to sort it out. was going to try this but the program needed 2.1 megs just to install , so as soon as i removed the temporary file i couldn't clean up some more space. Ironic huh?

any ideas where useless temporary files are placed

cheers

I had this problem too and almost completely ran out of memory.

I found IA spacemaker and IA file manager useful for finding the culprits.

(got it on trial from www.iastyle.com)

It helped because I could get the properties option to work on folder icons which then gave the total memory of the files contained within it. I couldn't seem to get this to work on smart explorer (unless its changed since).

Subsequently the folder IPSM/MAPI was showing several MBs in size so I deleted all files contained within it. I suspected these files were produced from my countless downloads of e-mails with file attachments? I still can't tell you what these files were but they all looked suspiciously like temp files.

Spacemaker now shows Total 7.5MB with 1.84MB used.

ALTHOUGH - Sp task manager still shows the old memory status while spacemaker shows the new memory status after file deletions. I haven't updated to the new version of SP task manager yet which I'm going to do now but I suspect this might have been a bug.

Has anyone else tried the above and had the same problem.

Take a look in IPSMApplication DataInstall as well and remove all contents...

Unless the Task Manager has been unloaded from memory it would still show the old status untill you hit View>Refresh... The updated version does that automatically, and the folder size shows correctly in SmartExplorer.
