YES ive finally managed to do it !!!

I'll be posting a VIDEO in a while so watch this space.

May take sometime before i post the complete HOW TO but be patient. Its a loooooooooooong process and im still trying to figure out the best configurations, but it can be done. (been working on it since yesterday evening, oh my eyes! ).

FULL SCREEN movies...bring em on ! ;) :lol: :lol:

Was trying to work out a solution to this one myself for a while. Had no luck as yet. Interestingly, there is a few registry settings under

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Microsoft > Windows Media Player 8 > Video

there are the following values;

Fit width, fullscreen, max height, max width

Fitwidth and fullscreen are both set to one, if the values of max height and width are increased, still no larger viewing size. Perhaps this is linked to the skin in use as well?

Ahh well, im off to see if i can find my own solution. Look forward to seeing yours....;)

But without unlocking the new player will be lost after a restart, so uncertification prefered.

I aint too impressed with the framerate/quality of movies in the smaller screen size so i can only imagine that full screen would be worst and bring out all the imperfections that's associated with converting movies to such a compressed format.

Slightly going off on a tangent here; why does the SPV run movies (and several other things as a matter of fact, ie doom) so slowly? I thoght it had a ~133Mhz chip in it. My old 133Mhz pc could run movies full screen no problem at all. I know chip architecture, memory and the fact that the pc had a graphics card (all be it a bog standard SVGA one) makes a difference, but we are only talkin about a couple of hundred pixels by another couple of hundred. Am i expecting too much of my little shiny thing? :?

Anyhow, movies on a phone are fantastic and i fully appreciate all the effort and advice by the good people of this forum.

Yes the movies are bit sluggish but end of the day how many phones can run movies ?

True. the SPV has a 133Mhz processor but it actually runs at something like 84Mhz. AFAIK another forum member is working on a software to overclock the SPV processor. So even a 15-20 percent improvement is speed will surely enhance the video quality (hopefully!).

Meantimen, we'll enjoy what we've got. ;)

Ok Cas, thanks for the feedback.

But i'm gonna winge (not that i usually do) again. Overclocking as good as it may be may, ney, WILL have an adverse affect on battery life won't it? I'm stilling willing to give it a shot though.

Like i said, it is brilliant being able to play videos on your phone, 2 full length movies and still room for some tuneage on my SD card! Unfortunately i think the SPV developers may have been trying to get a little ahead of themselves when they decided on the video playback functionality (not being able to resume playback let alone ffwd or rwd is a pain). Having said that we've all got to start somewhere so i suppose the SPV is a benchmark for future developments. Can't wait to see what the future brings!

Either way i love my phone, quirks and all, and now i'm off to watch several episodes of the simpsons on it in my next lecture. ;)

Right !

Ready for the HOW-TO ??

First, for the Pros out here:

1) Rotate the original video 90deg counter-clockwise.

2) Convert to WMV

3) Change the wmplayer.gif in windows to a BLACK gif (fullscreen size)

4) Tweak the wmplayer.skn (details below)

Viola !

And now for the not so pros :

The technique is quite simple in you think about it. It requires two things;

a) A video which is in landscape mode

:D A simple media skin (to give the fullscreen effect)

The first task is to get hold of a software that can perform Video rotation.

I've heard that MS Movie Maker for XP has a feature but im using W2k so havent tried that. If you have then ur more than welcome to use that or any other one.

The software i've used is LEADTOOLS MULTIMEDIA 13.0 (evaluation version). Can be downloaded from :

There server seems to be down at the moment. But keep trying.

Once you install it run the following prog:

Start - > Programs -> LEADTOOLS MULTIMEDIA EVAL 13.0 - > COM Objects -> 02 Multimedia Convert Demo

Two windows will pop up: LEADTOOLS Evaluation notice and VB AUDIO/VIDEO convertor demo(main). We'll be using the second one.

Use the following settings here:

Source: c:videossample.mpg (you can convert mpg, avi, qt, mov here, remember select your own file and not sample.mpg ;) )

Target:c:videossample.avi (the target should be an AVI)

Target format:AVI

Audio Compressor:MPEG layer-3

Video Compressor:Indeo ® Video 5.1 Compression filter

Click the properties button next to Video Compression. A window will pop up, title Video Compressor. Click Sequence Properties and check Quick Compress. Click Ok the return to previous menu.

Processing Filters: Click Video -> Insert Before -> VIDEO Rotation Filter -> ok

In the video processors window click properties and select 270 degress clockwise -> ok.

Now you are back in the main window. Click Convert.

The progress indicator on this window does'nt work. Stays at 0% all the time so dont worry. The process takes time so be patient. A four minute video took me some five minutes on a AMD XP 1600 with 512RAM. :shock:

I suggest you try with a small clip before converting whole movies.

If only it could convert WMVs. :evil:

Once the process is complete, you have a video is landscape mode (check in media player).

Next step is the almost the same as the global thread here.

Width = 170

Height = 220

Everything else remaing the same.

Convert the avi and now you have your compressed sample.wmv (or whatever).

Copy it to Storage CardMy Documents

Now comes the part where we tweak the media player.

Crate a file wmplayer.skn and copy the following code.

As you can see, i've gone for the ruthless approach here and got rid of all the captions and timers(we want full screen dont we :lol: ).

Copy this file to smartphonewidows

Next we need to create a gif. You can use paintbrush here. Create a 176x220 gif and fill it with black color. A FULL black background is what we need. Name it mwplayer.gif and copy it to smartphonewidows

It takes time before SPV media player reads new skin files.

Now ur ready to test. Run the media player. If you see a BLACK skin, things are going fine. Now play the video you copied.

FULL SCREEN , isnt it (well almost! :lol: )

I have not worked out what is different. I used a different piece of software to rotate the video. If you use VirtualDub it is a freeware piece of software and does not expire.

As you can see, the top 20 lines are blank. If i try to move it up a bit like

0,10,176,178 , it doesnt work at all. You get sound only, no video. This is the best placement i've figured out for the display. Can ne1 suggest why we cant move it up a bit more?

Ideally 0,0,176,220 is fullscreen. Any documentation anyone ?

I have tried tweaking the registry to increase the maximum height and width settings of media player, increased the gif file (the black background) and still no luck..

If its "x,y,w,h", then it may be because it gets confused over where WMP thinks the title bar shold be (?). Might not be any workaround for it otherwise as that is probably hard coded.

That's one theory anyway...
