I'm starting to feel physically ill by waiting for this phone. Such a hate/love relationship right now :)

Hopefully it'll be all love later... I really hope an early-september release is realistic, but I'm set for a late-september release here in sweden :P . I wouldn't mind beeing positively surprised though...

Well, expansys releasedate is back to Sept 6 now.

What is line 2? 2 phone numbers on one SIM card?

Hi Kchrpm

Line 2 means if you're in a call, and someone else tries to ring you, you have the option of putting the first person on hold and answering the second call (or you can just send the second person to voice mail, it's your choice). So you only have one number, but it just gives you a little more flexibility.

Kind regards

Umm, not exactly correct, you're describing Call Waiting.

Line 2 is where you have 2 numbers on 1 SIM card. So for example, you could give one number out as your business number and the other as your personal number. You can make and receive calls on both numbers from the one SIM card and one handset. AFAIK, only Orange in the UK offer this. See here.

They're back to listing USD $799.95 for Thursday, Sept. 6, 2007.

I had ordered it when it was $819.95 and wrote them an e-mail when it went down. Elite PROMPTLY credited me back the $20.95. Ok, they do get your money up front but they didn't have to credit me back. That is good customer service! I can't wait! I don't want the AT&T branded version, I really want this unlocked "original" version definitely with the 2 cameras and without all of that AT&T propaganda on it.

No word whether the P4550 will support Line 2. While snooping around in the registry I did see some keys that mentioned ALS (the technical name for Line 2), but that doesn't necessarily mean it'll work!

I don't have a Line 2 enabled SIM unfortunately.

Thanks Paul, looks like I will just have to wait and see. This has now happened to me twice, First SPV if I remeber correct supported then my SE P800 did not, fixed in P900 then with my Tytn lost it again (problem was orange also took away Everyphone for personal users so could not do a fixed divert).

I use my Line 2 all the time so its important, as it was promissed on the Tytn and works on the Smartphones you would think they could port it over to the WM PDA's also...

If anyone has any news please drop me a PM.

Thanks in advance.

Al

Over at the Boy Genius Report, they've heard that AT&T will release their branded version before HTC.

"On another note, one of our HTC contacts has informed us that AT&T will actually be the first to get the device, instead of HTC distributing their version to resellers first."

If so that may not be good news. I just got back from the AT&T Experience store in Atlanta (the newest of AT&T's flagship retail outlets -- they get the good stuff before anyone else) and asked about the Tilt's availability. The sales rep I spoke to is a bit of a phone junkie (hey, aren't we all) and knew all about the Tilt. He's not expecting it until October at the earliest, but more likely November/December.

On the plus side, he told me there would be a two-camera version and that the price with 2-year contract could be as low as $399.

Could be a bad sign for the Tilt if this is true:

http://blackberrycool.com/2007/08/16/005386/

Wow. I must say, this is probably the biggest piece of news we’ve ever broken here at BlackBerry Cool — and possibly the one that’s made us the angriest. We’ve just received word from one of our friends inside AT&T that the US carrier has been successful in their attempts to lockdown the GPS functionality in their upcoming BlackBerry 8820 so that the only functioning 3rd party software will be TeleNav.

First, this is a major piss off to AT&T customers looking to get their hands on the BlackBerry 8820 mid-September, but what’s more important is why AT&T chose to do this. Apparently - and remember, this is coming from someone inside AT&T - the carrier didn’t want to launch a device that would seem superior (or be competitive) to the iPhone. Sounds a little crazy, until you realize that a GPS/Wi-Fi’d device with push email and no funny-texting touchscreen that’s subsidized in price sounds a bit more appealing than a $500 device that enterprise customers can’t use.

We’ve been told that RIM was apparently livid over the decision (and with good reason), but AT&T basically said “do it or we won’t buy the 8820 or any future devices from you” and RIM backed down. Our AT&T informant also said that this was a call made by top RIM/AT&T brass, which sheds new light on Jim Balsillie’s statement that the carriers are one of RIM’s three masters.

Of course what would save the Tilt from this is the fact it costs the same/more than the iPhone, but that's still a very scary business plan for someone to be taking. The Blackberry would still not be as attractive a device to the mass-market/iPod-convert people that are buying so many of them now, yet they might cripple it anyway. Probably means the chance of any really nice WM non-touchsreen smartphones coming to AT&T is zero now.

I wonder if its really AT&T that doesnt want another phone that can compete with the iphone, or if it's Apple telling AT&T that.

then again, the AT&T rom has already been finished and it still has gps, so i think it should be fine.

Another thought is that they're just trying to pull a Verizon and force people to use their $10/mth service instead of getting what should be theirs for no additional cost.

Regardless of the reason, it's very bad to see another carrier following Verizon's lead instead of the other way around. Hopefully the hard-capped unlimited data plans don't start spreading, too :|

but paul made it sound like the gps in the finished rom wasnt that which you would pay for, but you could actually install your own 3rd party gps applications.

I was referring to the 8820 and what they'd potentially do to any other smartphones that come in under the iPhone's pricetag.

Does anyone know why MobilePlanet (The US site for Expansys) would state the following:

This phone has the 2100 UMTS UK version and not the 1900 UMTS US version network.

Other sites indicate that it comes equipped to handle those bands and more.

Please shed some light on this if you can. Does this mean that the MobilePlanet phone would not be able to utilize AT&T's 3G network?

Well if AT&T gimps the Kaiser like this, I'll just buy an unbranded version and wait until T-Mobile gets 3G here.
Do you plan on using T-Mobile's 3G with the Kaiser when the Kaiser doesn't support the 1700+2100MHz band?

Maybe wait for the Kaiser's competitor, the ETEN M900, to show up? That has SiRFIII GPS in it for one.

No worries, somebody may have missed the earlier reference (not me, sadly I've refreshed every 10 minutes since this thread was started! lol) so yours did no harm!

Does anybody know why T-Mobile chooses the uglier (IMO, and I think most others too) silver variant over the HTC one? I'd guess it would be continuity reasons with the rest of the Vario range but I can't see anybody seeing it and thinking "ooh look at that silver, out of date looking pocket PC - must be part of the T-Mobile Vario range. Meh.

I've been out of contract now for over a month, my fingers are getting itchy! :P

I have had my hands on the Kaiser! A testversion, of cause, but with the newest ROM and all...

I got to say, that it is sweet! Didn't made me buy this phone less, that's for sure...

And about the size, here is a comparison photo between the Kaiser and my N-Gage... Sorry for the poor quality, but it is taken with some Motorola....

Wow, sure makes the N-Gage look even more horrific than when I remember from E3. :)

Im just really tired of waiting for this to come out. Also, out of curiosity will the AT&T release date be the same as the HTC release date?

Hi Paul,

I got a question for you. I have been in contact with a dutch shop who might be stocking the kaiser. But they say they will be able to sell only the dutch version, meaning the rom will be only in dutch and seeing that their price is 699 Euros, i really want to sink my teeth into their deal. As such i am wondering though highly unlikely, if there is a posibility to buy the dutch version and through some googling obtain an english rom....

Or if you would be a good samaritan and help a brother out, cause i understand you will be receiving the final rom shortly.......

<_<

Hi everyone,

This is my first post but I have been following this topic since the start.

This is getting a bit silly now, this phone is supposed/rumoured to be released in the next 2-3 weeks and it still hasn't been officially anounced by HTC yet! I am going on honeymoon on 14th September and was hoping to have this phone by then (I will be doing some driving and being able to only take one device for GPS and phone would be great). My current contract (on O2) expires this friday and I was hoping to move to T-mobile (with PAC code) and get the Vario III. This seems unlikely to happen now. Oh well, I'll just have to wait until I get back.

Paul and everybody, keep up the good work
