Trouble syncing with windows mobile 6.0 with groupwise 7

OK, I've got an Orange E650 (ie HTC 710, Vox). It's been debranded and had the fix to allow software installation.

It syncs fine with Outlook 2007 running on Vista at home.

I've tried various packages to get it to sync with Groupwise (ruuning with XP sp2 and active sync latest version) at work including the Novell's own Groupwise PDA connect and also Laplink's PDA sync. In each case the CAB file is installed on the phone but when I try to synchronise I get "Device not found, check active sync is running.", needless to say active sync is running. My employers IT helpdesk haven't managed to fix it and they're used to setting up syncing for PDAs, Pocket PCs etc with groupwise.

I'm wondering if this is a WM6 thing or may even relate to some registry setting on the phone.

I'd welcome any ideas, it's getting frustrating.
