s710 battery life issues

hi, bought an s710 the other day and have been having problems with short battery life (as other users have).

done some testing, thought i'd post the results.

typically a full charged phone (from 8am) would be at 30% come 8pm the same night.

I installed acbpowermeter and noted a current draw of 160mA.

Having seen a post regarding coming out of flightmode, i did this the current dropped to around 80mA.

I close a few tasks (that i could) dropped this to 65mA.

I made a call and noted that for the duration (and after) the current draw did not change.

According to a calculator on http://www.gizmology.net/batteries.htm, 0.060A for a 1.050Ah battery would equate to around 7hrs 100% discharge time (about right for talktime quoted??).

For the standby times to be somewhere near, we'd need a standby current of 10mA or less.

During the test, there was no GPRS, no wifi, no BT and no apps running that didnt need to be.

Screen dimming is working fine.

I can only assume that during standby, the cpu should be entering sleep etc, but it isnt.

I rang HTC and they said no firmware updates are on the horizon (i pointed out the camera bug, landscape, portrait etc).

So what do you all think? Without a fix, the phone is pretty useless (cant take a charger everywhere).

Thanks

Neil

Hmmm... I have none of such problems with my S710 and charge the battery maximum every 2-3 days, using phone 10 times per day and also lots of internet and games. So I really don't know how others can run into such problems unless there is some energy draining process running in the background for example. I use CeleTask to clean up when needed.

I was having terrible battery life, having to charge the phone once a day. So I bought a spare battery from expansys. Put it in the new battery on Saturday afternoon & haven't had to charge it up yet. (It's now Tuesday morning). So I suspect that there are some dud batteries shipping with the phones.

I've got the vodafone variant of the Vox, and have been really disappointed by the battery life. I only use my device for push mail (set to push in the day, and manual at night), and am only getting a couple of days out of a complete charge. I moved from a vodafone v1240 (rebranded qtek) which would last me 5 days on one charge. Despite the benefits of the device (the keyboard is a godsend for replying to emails), I am seriously considering going back to my vodafone v1240.

NB. one thing I have noticed is that the gprs signal is a lot weaker on the vox than the qtek. Don't know if this is the reason.

I make about 10 calls a day, push email, lots of internet, and my battery can be dead by 8pm. I can never go more than 1 day without having to re-charge.

I like the sound of a battery that lasts 3 days. Might have to invest in a new battery from Expansys.

hi again,

thought i'd share the results of some tests i made today regarding the s710 and battery life etc.

something got me thinking last night, this phone is my girlfriends, and i recall when the phone was new, the screen went completely blank after a timeout period. this to save power no doubt.

anyways, i noted that since she had done "whatever??" the blanking out never happened anymore, just went dim.

as it turns out, she had the homescreen set to windows live (or similiar). when i changed the homescreen to windows default... the blanking returned.

so.... i left the phone charging all night and left it to its own devices during the day.

now you may recall previous current consumption was between 160 and 80mA.

after leaving it throughout the day, after 9hrs of standby, i have 94% battery!!! woo hoo..

avg discharge rate 9mA..

so its clear the biggest battery eater is the screen (even when dimmed!!).

at least proper standby works.

i am wondering why windows live homescreen prevents blanking??? could it be the showing of its extra screenbar? (i.e. live messenger/search/etc...).

its ok with me though, i prefer the uncluttered look, hehe

hope that was of some interest/use

If you check out Tornado Power Control, you can reduce the CPU speed when dim and idle, which may prolong battery life even more
