Removing Call Forwarding

Hi all,

I'm just coming to e-baying my old I-Mate SPL for some much needed funds and i've encountered a problem. Originally I was using an Orange PAYG sim card when suddenly the phone refused to read the sim card, displaying 'Searching' instead of the network name-despite the sim being ok in other phones and I presumed it was broken. As I was getting a Vox I decided to ignore this and forget about the SPL. However, last night I put my T-Mob contract sim card in the phone (expecting the same thing to happen-i.e the sim card would not be recognised) but the signal coverage indicator showed 3 bars and the network name showed up rather than displaying 'Searching' as before. All looked to be in order-until I noticed the little icon showing that call forwarding was on. I've tried to remove this using the menus in the settings options but to no avail. I've also performed a hard reset on the phone-this also failed to remove the icon. Does anyone have any ideas? I haven't used the imate configuration thing (was deleted during the hard reset) which receives the relevant network settings-could this be the cause? Anyone have any other ideas? I could really do with selling this and getting some cash!

I had something similar when I had a full divert on whilst abroad, I'm on orange too. When I got back I couldn't get a signal in the UK to remove the call divert. I ended up removing the divert in another handset, then leaving my orange sim in the SPL overnight to sort itself out and it eventually did. Orange were no help - neither were imate. I think it was to do with the IMEI registering on the network.

In your case I think it's a bit like the voicemail indicator - if you have a voicemail and swop sims the handset still shows a voicemail until a status update is sent by whatever sim is in the phone, even if you have no voicemail waiting on the new sim.

So, with the t-mob sim, setup a divert and remove it and the symbol should go away.....

As your selling you could try the rom update - might sort it out :

Thanks for that mate. I'm not sure if we had the same problem or not. Basically at the moment-the T-Mob sim finds coverage but has the call forwarding icon showing; whereas the Orange PAYG sim card does not regsiter a signal at all and just displays 'Searching'. These are two seperate problems aren't they?

When you say set up a call divert on the T-Mob sim-do you mean on the SPL or a different phone? I've just tried to do it on the SPL and it says the settings can't be opened?

I think it's the way orange show up the diverts combined with the way the SPL handles them that's the issue. I've never had it on any other handset and I was able replicate it ( cos I'm sad :-) plus I reported it to imate as a bug. I do the same thing with other wm5 handsets all the time without it happening.

I'm not surprised the t-mob sim settings can't be opened.

Leave the orange sim in overnight, switching off and on etc a few times, also try changing the network selection from auto to manual and back.

Have you tried the upgrade ROM?

Thanks for your assistance with this, I really appreciate it. You sound like you know what you're talking about-which is alot more than can be said for me! :)

Why do you say you're surprised the T-Mob sim settings can't be opened? I'll give that leaving it in overnight thing a try-i've done it before but without the switching on and off and changing the network selection stuff so i'll see if that makes a difference!

I can't upgrade the ROM at the moment, forgotten all my club i-mate details as I haven't logged into the site for ages. I'm waiting for them to get back to me so hands are a bit tied at the moment. I also can't get that network settings configurator back until I have my log in details as it was deleted during the hard reset. I've e-mailed Expansys where I bought it from so maybe they can do something? When I originally informed them of the Orange sim problem they just replied telling me the phone was faulty and to return it, but I was a little anxious to do this after hearing other peoples horror stories about i-mate repairs!

So whats at fault here? The Orange sim card? Or the phone? Or both? Say if I can get the phone to recognise my Orange sim card, does this mean my problems with the call divert on the t-mobile sim would also be fixed? I'm well out of my depth as i'm sure you can tell!

imate's software for the radio is the issue IMO. Orange handles certain things differently in terms of network notifications for voicemail, network settings - afaik they are the only network in the UK that send a sim update to bar or remove certain features - the others just handle it at the network side for example, and imate probably hasn't tested their software with every providor around the world to iron out bugs - we do that for them! :)

I'm *not* surprised the t-mob settings can't be accessed as the phone still thinks there is a divert - so the settings from the t-mob sim don't match the last used in the handset on orange.

p.s you don't need to log in to club imate to get the imate roms. Once you work out the root to their FTP there is no login if you go direct - I can't post a link here but can PM you if you want.

Is your SPL SIM locked to Orange or T-Mobile, or did you buy it SIM free (as it was Expansys, I'd assume SIM free)?

Your problem is related to the operator not recognising the SIM/IMEI combination, so no amount of configurator downloading will make any difference- these only set the data connection and MMS/SMS parameters. This is why you still get the erroneous Divert icon after a hard reset.

Although you can see a signal with the T-Mobile SIM, you may not be registered on the network; likewise if Orange has 'lost' the SIM card's credentials, that is why you can't get an Orange signal. Have you tried going into the Phone settings, and in the Network tab, doing a Manual search for the Network?

Next thing to try is a new (or fully working) Orange SIM card in the SPL, then seeing if you get a signal. If so, go into Phone/Settings and reapply, or cancel Call Forwarding, to see if that helps. If so, it may suggest that you need a new SIM card from Orange.

Ah ok thanx, that explains things a little better! I see what you mean about the T-Mob settings as well. Thanks for the pm with the i-mate link, i'll have a check on that when I return from lunch! DO you think the rom will help with this problem then? Had a reply from Expansys, they seem to be wanting to send the phone back to the manufacturer, which i'm a little relucatant to do as it'll be away for months if other users experiences are anything to go by!

Hi Neil (woo, another helper :P )

I bought the phone sim free from Expansys. Yes i've tried doing the manual search for a network-it just pulls up that error message regarding not being able to download. I can try and get hold of a brand new Orange sim card-but the existing one still works in several other phones so this can't be the problem...can it? I think you're right about not being registered on T-Mob though even though it does show up with signal. This is really beginning to do my head in now!! :)

I'm not talking from experience here, but other folk have found that a new SIM card helps in similar circumstances. Can you pop into an Orange shop, and ask them to try?

Another tack would be to remove the SIM card before doing a hard reset- then at least it should clear the 'Divert' status. Make sure you are doing a full Hard reset, not just a soft restart. Once reset and working without a SIM card, then try putting in a different Orange SIM, and see what happens.

Umm, if you try and call out with the t-mobile sim, what happens? Three beeps?

If you *#06# does the IMEI come up ok and does it match the one on the label under the battery ( perhaps apart from the last 2 checksum numbers in the electronic version)?

If it doesn't call out on t-mob and gets no signal on orange at all it's behaving as if it's been barred or the IMEI has become corrupted. A corrupt IMEI is as bad as a barred one as it doesn't 'make sense' to the network as the checksum doesn't match. It's like trying to make up a credit card number - you can't easily there is a specific sequence to them.

If this is the case, try flashing the latest rom to re-write the radio firmware - a hard reset would not do this it just resets the 'user' area.

If still no joy, check the IMEI with orange and call expansys.
