Cant get 3G signal anywhere it would seem??

I've had a Vario II with T-Mobile for about a week.

Cracking little PDA phone so far.

However, I'm slightly confused about something.

When I look at the icons along the top of the screen, I see a square with "G" in it and next to it, a signal strength icon showing 4 bars.

Looking in the user guide, it says the square "G" icon is an indicator of a GPRS signal.

Manual says a square icon with "3G" means its connected to the 3G network.

Phoned up tech support as It looks like so far I had only been able to connect via GPRS. Web access etc seemed quite slow.

The tech went through a few checks with me on the phone and looked up his area coverage map using my postcode. He confirmed I should be seeing a 3G signal of around 3 bars inside and 4 outside.

Eventually he said I may have a faulty handset and requested I return it to the store where it was purchased.

Did that this morning, no problem at all.

Got home, tried out new Vario II handset and once again I'm getting a square symbol with a "G" in it, plus the signal strength indicator with 4 bars.

The thing is, I asked the bloke in the T-Mobile shop what icon it should be showing when a 3G network was available and he replied "It shows a "G" icon".

I said "So not a 3G icon then?" and he said he had a Vario and lived about a mile from my home address, gets 3G coverage no problem at all, and his shows a "G" icon, not a "3G" one.

So who is correct?. The tech services guy and the user manual or the bloke in the store?.

What do your Vario's show when connected to 3G folks?.

/confused........

Forgot to say, the "G" icon is there when the Vario is idle, with the little antennae signal strength meter and 4 bars next to it.

When I go online with Web N Walk, the "G" icon in the square stays there, but the little antennae symbol next to the 4 bars changes to a "G" icon as well.

I've tried in several different areas around me, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling, Falkirk and as far afield as Bradford in the middle of last week, but all it comes up with are these icons on the display:-

Thats a speedtest I just carried out. Not even dial-up speeds!!!. :)

That seems odd mate. You should be displaying "3G" whenever its available. The bloke in the shop was talking cobblers :)

I spend time in and around Perth myself so I know 3G is available up there in the Frozen North :P

I guess you've got it set to "Auto" in the settings menu rather than GPRS? That would have been the first thing anyone at T would have checked with you.

I'm stumped! Mind you it did take me 3 goes to get a decent VII out of T so you've away to go yet ;)

Cheers for the reply m8.

Yeah, I cant work it out either. Guess I will need to call back and speak to Tech Services again.

I did say to the fella in the T-Mobile shop today "Are you quite sure?" when he said that it should show a "G" symbol and he was quite emphatic about it. Tsk, tsk....!!.

I've got day off work on Weds, so I'm going to jump in the car and go for a run around a few places to see if this handset picks up any 3G signal anywhere within say......a 150 mile radius, just to be sure.

The handset I had when down in Bradford, in Glasgow and Edinburgh last week, was the first one. Will try this second one that I got exchanged today and see what happens.

Damn annoying though. Reason I went for the Vario II with T-Mobile was to get good net speeds, specifically for my laptop for work and I'm a bit miffed so far.

Just an idea, and it'll cost you a pound, but when you go back to the T shop ask the guy to confirm the 3G signal avaliability at the shop's postcode then attempt to log onto T's mobile TV (thats the bit that'll cost you a pound!) It's only available if you have 3G service, not over GPRS.

The link should be (but isn't) available from T's homepage, so stick this in your Fave's before you go:

That should prove it to them one way or the other.

Bloke in a shop doesn't know what he's talking about, or he's never used a Vario II. Does he have a Vario 1 by chance? (I don't know the device, but thought it did not support 3G).

I said "So not a 3G icon then?" and he said he had a Vario and lived about a mile from my home address, gets 3G coverage no problem at all, and his shows a "G" icon, not a "3G" one.

Tech Services and the manual (written by HTC who actually make it) are correct.

As long as your SIM card is enabled for 3G and is a USIM (you've not put in an old SIM by chance?) then you should get 3G services. Tried a hard reset?

On my Vario 2 (which is now running WM6 I get this, but the icon is very similar on WM5):

RESULT!!!!!

I called Tech Services this evening and asked them about it.

The tech said exactly what you have said and that no.....if you are on the 3G signal, your Vario should show the 3G icon. I told him I had exchanged the Vario II today for a replacement and that it was still not showing up as 3G.

He suggested trying a "hard reset" which I did, and now its showing this:-

I'M HAPPY!!!! :)

No idea why it came up after a hard reset, but it did.
